what burning software would you recommend? cdburnerxp or nero 9?

Infrarecorder is pretty solid and it's free. Otherwise - Nero.

I use Prassi ONES for general stuff and ImgBurn for image files. Very few 'coasters' to date.

Nero has gotten kind of bloaded, but the free version isn't too bad. ImgBurn is also a good option for free.

Ashampoo Burning Studio. Complete facility without the Nero bloat. Latest versions are paid but previous versions become freeware. 2009 available here.

does it have any compatibility problems like with nero? whereby if a disc is burned using a newer version, using an older version of nero will not be able to continue burning?

I use Nero 9 Reloaded Back it up and Burn bundle. Does very well. You can get the free version here. If you get a new dell pc it most likely has Roxio Creator preinstalled. I bought a new tower from dell almost two years ago and a laptop last year from wal-mart which both came with it. However my laptop also had Cyberlink DVD.

I would go for Nero as it's great for a multimedia suite.

I was a life long believer in Nero, but then one day I was fixing a clients computer and they wanted a free CD Burning software that day I discovered CDBurnerXP - It's so stress free so now I use that.
