Malwarebytes Native Message Service Stopped Working

... I haven't seen another "Malwarebytes Native Message Service - Stopped Working" error since 02-Sep-2023 @ 6:33 AM and all my protection modules are enabled in Malwarebytes Premium...

I don't know if this is a coincidence, but in the past few days since the "Malwarebytes Native Message Service - Stopped Working" errors stopped being logged in my Reliability Monitor I've started seeing the "Let's confirm you are human" prompt shown below when I browse to the Malwarebytes forum.  To date this challenge only appears intermittently, and only if I receive an automatic email notification in MS Outlook 2019 from Malwarebytes that someone has replied in a thread that I am following and I click the blue Go To This Post button in the email to try to automatically open the thread in my Firefox browser.

Does anyone know if this pop-up challenge is legitimate, and if so is it some kind of experimental CAPTCHA feature added to the forum software or Malwarebytes Browser Guard v2.6.9  that uses the Malwarebytes Native Message Service?  As a precaution I've never clicked the orange "Begin" button on the pop-up to see what happens just in case this pop-up is some sort of malware - I simply close the browser tab and then browse to the Malwarebytes forum as I normally do using a bookmark (https://forums.malwarebytes.com/forum/41-malwarebytes-for-windows-support-forum/) that's saved on my Firefox bookmarks toolbar.

Just to add to this, I'm seeing this exact problem too on Windows 10, an instance in every session.
Using MB Premium 4.6.0 on Windows 10 22H2 x64.
I think it probably started after the last MB update.
The errors have been logged every day for the last six days.

Good morning all. Long time, no post, but that's mainly because Malwarebytes continues to perform well (not that it's put to the test often, thankfully). I too am seeing the error reported in this thread in Reliability Monitor on my aged ThinkPad T450s running Windows 10  Pro.

Just in case it helps in resolving the issue, I attach my MBST Support Tool results.

Just a small update; If you uninstall Browser Guard, the problem is away with Ransom protection enabled.

Affected users should note that a new Malwarebytes Browser Guard v2.6.10 browser extension was just released.

I can't confirm my own "Malwarebytes Native Message Service - Stopped Working" errors had something to do with my Malwarebytes Browser Guard extension (it could be a coincidence that I haven't had any further errors logged in my Reliability Monitor since I disabled and then re-enabled Malwarebytes Browser Guard v2.6.9 in all my browsers on 02-Sep-2023 ) but users might want to check and see if their errors stop after all browsers (e.g., MS Edge, Chrome, Firefox, etc.) that have the Malwarebytes Browser Guard extension installed have been updated to the latest v2.6.10.

Then your system needs to be looked closer to with some logs, on my computers and clients no errors anymore!

You clearly can see your system has more errors that have to be looked into.

You can try to de-install browser guard and shut down browser, and install again, also i would advice to completely install malwarebytes with a clean install and their tool.

Well, this is disappointing. My Malwarebytes Native Messaging Service - Stopped Working errors have returned since my Malwarebytes Browser Guard for Firefox extension updated to v2.6.10. 👎

Until today I had gone six days without one of these errors (i.e., since 02-Sep-2023 @ 6:13 AM - see details <here>) but after receiving the update for Malwarebytes Browser Guard for Firefox v2.6.10 yesterday on 08-Sep-2023 this error reappeared today in my Reliability Monitor on 09-Sep-2023 @ 6:33 AM.  These errors always seem to occur about 30 min after I power up my laptop in the morning but I have no idea what triggers it.

I'll monitor for a few days just to make sure this isn't a one-time occurrence and then update to the latest Malwarebytes Premium4.6.2.281-1.0.2131 to see if that fixes the problem.

Did you try to remove the Browser Guard, close browser, restart en install renewed? I did the same on all computers, and have not seen any errors again

I've only had it once on the 29th Aug just in case it comes back do you mean restart the browser and reinstall browser guard or restart the whole PC

Hi NewTricks:

Just checking in.  Did an update to Malwarebytes Browser Guard v2.6.10 and/or Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.2 fix your "Malwarebytes Native Message Service - Stopped Working" errors?

It appears the error I saw on 09-Sep-2023 the day after my Malwarebytes Browser Guard (MBBG) for Firefox extension updated to v2.6.10 was indeed a one-time-only glitch. I monitored my system for another 4 days before updating to Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.2 on 13-Sep-2023 and haven't seen another error, so I'm still guessing that something I did on 02-Sep-2023 when I disabled and re-enabled Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.1 and Malwarebytes Browser Guard v2.6.9 (see details in my 05-Sep-2023 post <above>) must have done something to get my Malwarebytes Native Message Service back in sync.

Win10Prov22H2ReliabilityMonitorMalwarebytesNativeMessageServiceNoErrorEDITED17Sep2023.png.1994b926fe8b5edc615d243b0c2b11f7.png

When I'm troubleshooting a minor glitch that isn't crashing my software or causing some other serious problem I prefer to make one change at a time and then monitor my system for a few days for look any change in behaviour. Jason Maxham wrote a blog post on troubleshooting in 2012 at Change Just One Thing that's a bit old but the basic principle still applies today.

Yes it was stated in the log for the new version of MWB.

Browser Guard integration crash occurrences

For people that still have these errors; de-install browser guard, shut down your browser, restart en re-install Browser guard, this should fix the problem.

@lmacri I did not attempt any changes due to the variety of experiences and the possibility of an official fix. Thanks for asking.

My troubleshooting abilities are extremely limited. The native message service error appeared to resolve on its own, however, now Windows updates are failing frequently. I see from my logs that the time is fails and the time it successfully updates are the same. Since no other anomalies are present in everyday use, I'll wait until the administrator returns from vacation.

If all goes well we should have a release version by end of this week to fix this issue...

Hi NewTricks:

I'm not certain, but it looks like a bug fix for the Malwarebytes Native Message Service - Stopped Working errors was included in today's Malwarebytes v4.6.3.282-1.0.2151 update.  From H4V0C's 22-Sep-2023 release notes <here>:

Quote

 Issues Fixed

  •  Addressed crashing issues
  •  Fixed Browser Guard integration
  •  Fixed notifications appearing twice

I won't be able to confirm if today's Malwarebytes Premium v4.6.3-1.0.2151 update solves the problem because the last error I saw logged in my Reliability Monitor occurred on 09-Sep-2023 as noted in my 17-Sep-2023 post <above>.

EDIT:

Are you still having problems with your Windows Updates?  If so you might want to gather a fresh set of diagnostic logs with the Malwarebytes Support Tool (Advanced tab | Gather Logs) and attach the mbst-grab-results.zip file to your next post.

The latest release version of Malwarebytes should now correct this Native Message issue. Please open Malwarebytes, click the small gear icon, and click the About tab - then click the "Check for updates" link.

In most cases you will not be asked to restart the computer, but I recommend that you go ahead and restart the computer after the update and let us know if you're still seeing this issue.

Thank you everyone for your patience while we worked on this update
