You need both. Windows, unless there are issues will update it self each month.

If you are referring to Windows Defender it also updates it self daily and also scans in the background each week.

Are you having issues with either, Which one?

When you run Malwarebytes you only get updates for Malwarebytes.

To get updates fro Windows. Click on start and choose settings and click on "update and security" and then click check for updates.

I just restarted my computer and ran Malwarebytes again.  I get the same result as as before.  It doesn't tell me if it's updating Malwarebytes or Windows 10 or both.  (Keep in mind that I'm using the free version of Malwarebytes.)  If it's just updating itself, I need to know.  I can easily update Windows 10 separately.  If its updating both itself and Windows 10, I need to know this too.  Either way, the wording should be more explicit so that users know exactly what's being updated.

It only updates itself.

As far as know, there are no Antivirus/anti malware programs that will update Windows as well.

The program is to clean (free) or to protect (only in the paid version) your computer from malware nothing more.

What/ where did you get any info about it being able to update Windows?

You get the Malwarebytes database updates when you open Malwarebytes and do a scan.

You get WINDOWS updates when you follow my above post with the screenshots.

What can I do for you to explain any better?

Porthos,

Alright.  I'm convinced that you're right.  I'll run Malwarebytes and the Wndows 10 update separately.  Thanks for your patience and persistence.  I'll leave it up to the Malwarebytes administrators whether they want to improve the wording so that other people don't get as confused as I did.  All they have to state is "Checking for updates to Malwarebytes" instead of "Checking for  updates."

Over the 12 years I have been assisting here on the forums and also a Malwarebytes reseller you are the first case of someone being confused over a Malware removal/AV program updating anything but its own program and databases.

You suggestion will be passed on the the developers.

Please be safe and healthy during these trying times.  Best wishes.

Quite frankly, I'm surprised that other people didn't recognize and report this ambiguity during your twelve+ years of assistance in this forum.  The fact that I did makes me more astute and conscientious than many others.  And don't forget that the Forum Community Manager of the Malwarebytes Staff himself asserted in this long discussion that the updates applied to both Windows 10 and the Malwarebytes program.  So I don't understand why you would be surprised that I would want to know if the updates applied to Windows 10, the Malwarebytes program, or both.

Advancedsetup said that there are updates for both, that's right because Microsoft posted new update recently. Malwarebytes however does not install updates for Windows. It is only updating itself with a new database or version. Windows updates are still delivered via the screen shots phortos posted. Even when you do nothing you will get updates automatically for both. Meaning Windows will look itself for updates and install them if any, as the same thing counts for Malwarebytes.

It can't be more clear then this i guess... In my 20 years in working with computers and AV i never heart any of my clients that does not understand this. The only question i sometimes get is people calling me; Hey Malwarebytes is telling me there is an update, can i install this? Then i say sure if it is for Malwarebytes no problem. Other AV programs say just the same, there is an update available... Meaning an update for its own program. Yes some AV will also check if you did install recent Windows updates and if there are any available, it brings you to the screen Phortos posted. So every program just updates itself, what can be difficult about that?

Hello @Doctorcos

Any unintended confusion is to be regretted.

Going by what you wrote at the top

Quote

I have Malwarebytes Free 4.1.0.  The first thing it does is "Checking for updates"

Malwarebytes can only update itself.   You have the free version.  The free version of Malwarebytes can be updated manually by you going to Settings   and clicking on "Check for Updates" in the Malwarebytes program.   Malwarebytes will also update the definitions at the time that you start a Scan  ( in Malwarebytes).

The Malwarebytes program is entirely separate  and has nothing to do with Microsoft Windows Update.

The "check for updates"  section  in the Malwarebytes program is strictly only for Malwarebytes.

H T H

Cheers.
