Is Malwarebytes Premium officially compatible with Windows Defender?

Recommended Posts

Is there any official position on Malwarebytes Premium being 100% compatible with Windows Defender, when Malwarebytes is not registered with Windows Security Center and real-time protection is enabled for both?

I couldn't find anything explicit in the support documentation or posted here. The closest seems to be a lack of its mention on this page, but that specifically deals with Web Protection.

It's generally accepted that you should never run more than one real-time AV as they can conflict, making you less safe, not more. With Malwarebytes Free this obviously isn't an issue, nor for Malwarebytes Premium in its default state (as of v4), as Defender is disabled when installed. However, with the option to unregister with WSC, surely the risk for conflicts is very real. If not, how has Malwarebytes accomplished what no other AV has?

To be clear, I'm not asking about personal experiences of using this setup, I've read plenty here and elsewhere. Rather, I want to know if it is officially deemed compatible, or just a possible configuration that users run at their own risk.

Many thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

is there anything official to that effect?

You will not find anything anywhere on the Malwarebytes site saying that. Malwarebytes has been fine with Windows Defender since Microsoft introduced it.

Windows Defender or Windows Security as it is now known, is a part of the OS so Malwarebytes would not do anything to conflict with it.

The way Malwarebytes protection works is it will only detect when a file is run/executed or during a scan. This keeps it from clashing with on access protections.

Well, with a little more searching I found a Malwarebytes compatibility list - https://www.malwarebytes.com/pdf/reviews/avtestingreport.pdf

However, it's from 2014/15 and is at odds with the incompatibility list I posted earlier (not surprising, it's a completely different product now).

I'm guessing there's no up to date version of this? Or for that matter, a more extensive incompatibility list like other AVs have? - Kaspersky - Bitdefender

Also, just to clarify, Windows Security is the general security interface, whereas Windows Defender is the actual AV, and has now been renamed Microsoft Defender (because reasons).

I'm not aware of official documentation but I'll check with support on Monday.

For now, you can review the following articles

Malwarebytes Security and other antivirus software

Support confirmed what I already knew. No, we do not have official documentation that Windows Defender works at the same time with Malwarebytes with zero conflict.

However, we do know that from practical experience that it does not.

If you do have an issue please let us know and we'll try to assist you.

Thank you

All you have to do is check the option in Malwarebytes to "Not Register in Windows Security" (not sure of the exact wording), I've run FSecure and Malwarebytes together with no isssues.

Thanks. I will look for that. FWIW, I have run both together for many years, but only recently began receiving that notification.
