Mbam hung on update, no protection now - NONE!

Recommended Posts

Had PAID version of Mbam for many years - great program. Last attempted upgrade hung on install. Now there is none. Here is the event:

  1. Saw notice to upgrade Mbam. Clicked OK.
  2. No Philadelphia lawyer handy so just clicked "I agree" anyway.
  3. There was zero progress on the install bar.
  4. Could not Cancel, [X], or Ctl-Alt-Del
    Rebooted
  5. Same notice to upgrade again, said no.
  6. Malwarebytes no longer showing in tray.
  7. Opened Mbam from Start > All Programs.
  8. Opened the GUI, clicked "My Account" and it hung too.
    Re-booted
  9. Same notice to upgrade again, said no. Again.
  10. Malwarebytes no longer showing in tray.
  11. Open Start > All programs Mbam is missing now.
    Check Programs and Features (Add/Remove)
    Malwarebytes is gone!
  12. Was it something I said? Please sir, may I have it back?

There is zero protection now. Some update. For sure, this "upgrade" uses a lot less resources. >:(

As @Porthos mentioned, you can download and re-install.

Most likely what happened in the first place though is in step 4, where you rebooted. If the installer sits in one place for awhile, it's usually because it's having issues cleaning up files. Rebooting in the middle of that, probably removed some files, but not all, and left Malwarebytes in a broken state. We are working on more the upgrade process more intuitive so users don't get stuck in that state again.

Thanks @ both of you. I must ask @Pothos, just how long should one wait while nothing is moving before ctrl-alt-del, and other tries before rebooting?

UPDATE: I did as suggested and waited exactly 30 minutes. It was frozen when it started the install (zero bar grads), can't [X], it, can't ctrl-alt.del. Same as I already said, but was OK repeating it over, just to prove, it wasn't the idiot on the keyboard.

I gather since the "upgrade" won't work, I cannot get a downgrade in order ingrade it back to where it was when it worked? I should find something else now?

If the upgrade is not working... lets try and get a clean re-install.

Let's try this next.... (Malwarebytes clean removal tool will backup your license information and then re-enter the license to the new install)

  1. Please follow the steps in this pinned topic to uninstall your current version of MBAM and reinstall the latest build - Malwarebytes mb-clean tool (NOTE: After uninstalling with the mb-clean tool you will be asked to reboot. Once you reboot it will ask you if you want to re-install Malwarebytes, you can select YES (it will download the latest version) or you can download the latest version manually (currently v3.2.2.2029 CU 1.0.207) to re-install from HERE)
  2. If that does not correct the issue, then please read the following and attach to your next reply the requested logs - Diagnostic Logs (after you run all the tools requested, all the logs will be combined into one log file named: mb-check-results.zip located on your Desktop (which will include the FRST logs inside the zip file))
  3. NOTE: More info about the latest Malwarebytes 3.2.2 HERE; MB 3 User Guide ONLINE; MB 3 User Guide PDF; MB 3 FAQ: Malwarebytes 3.0 - Frequently Asked Questions

Please let us know how it goes.
