MBAM and pirated keys

Tech

Recommended Posts

Recently, I've read about the effort of MBAM against piracy and the reward of a lifetime license for the users who use a pirated key of MBAM. Well, it's an honorable effort. But, in the next moment, I've though. And what about the loyal users of the free version (which recommend MBAM to a lot of other users)? Should I become a pirate?

It's not a loophole. Rather than punish those that may have been swindled by others we chose not to punish them other paying customers. I went ahead and replied to that post but no need to really. We're aware of the issue and that it's posted in many locations on the Web. Yes there will be some that choose to be dishonest and if that's the sort of people they are then it would be hard to stop them from pirating anyways. Some choose to be dishonest in life.

Thanks

Ron

Malwarebytes would not have so many pirated keys if they would just change their license model.......

$25 a year for anti exploit?

$25 a year for malwarebytes?

No wonder there are so many pirated keys, for that kind of money one should get a lifetime license.

Now I understand they gave legit licenses away to all pirated users of malwarebytes with the latest build. Do they think there are not going to be a whole new set of keys or keygens to come out with the most current build of Anti Exploit after a while?

It's silly and a catch 22 situation, but in my mind malwarebytes licensing model is more of greed than helping others, just look at Crypto Prevent, similar software to anti exploit, I can get a lifetime license of it for just $15, which one do you think I'm going to choose? I can buy it and NEVER have to worry about paying for another version or update ever again.

Change the license model and you'll be surprised how the pirated keys will drop.

Adding my 2 cents here, changing the licence model (subscription cost) would have virtually no effect on combatting pirates. When Malwarebytes offered the cheap lifetime licence, piracy was rampant. Some people simply will not pay for something they can get via pirates for free. Nothing will change on that front unless every security company's software was offered for free, which is never going to happen.

I'm just saying, I'll use the free version(s) but I'll never pay $25 a year for this type of software especially when there is equal software available for much less with lifetime licenses.

Hi, Crispo:

$25 a year covers up to 3 PCs in the same household.

AFAIK There are no other, high-quality, robust, REAL-TIME, FREE Anti-Malware applications.

Free products are only manual, on-demand scanners that can only remove an infection that has already made it past your AV onto the system.

The paid, real-time products help to PREVENT infection in the first place.

IMHO, as just another home user, that is well worth the expense and MUCH cheaper than the time, effort, aggravation, cost and potential data loss of a malware infection and its potentially catastrophic consequences.

Also, see HERE and here.

Having said all that, Crispo, it's certainly up to you what software to install on your computers. :)

Cheers,

Not to be arrogant but I don't care if it was $25 for 10 pc's, one should not have to pay a yearly subscription to stay safe. To be honest all these software companies that are going with yearly subscriptions have gotten out of hand. Sandboxie tried it also and guess what? they are back to lifetime licenses.

Obviously you didn't read my previous posts, Crypto Prevent, a similar software to Anti Exploit, $15 for a lifetime 1 pc license. I'd rather pay $45 for a 3 pc lifetime license than $25 a year, year after year for 3 pc's, and who is to say that Malwarebytes doesn't decide to up their price after a year or two?

Personally, I too like to save money especially when it comes to protecting my PC and as much as I frown upon some of the high end security software charges (Not Malwarebytes) I pay them to have peace of mind. I also shop around for my yearly Kaspersky AV licence as it pays to but it on disk though 'Black Friday' sales or via local shops which I hasten to add, is cheaper than renewing through Kaspersky itself and you still get all the protection.

At the end of the day, it's each to their own and we will not always agree on things which keeps for an interesting world ;) If you don't like the prices, don't pay them. Simple!

As a foot note: Malwarebytes $50 for a year to have 3 PC's protected with anti-malware and anti-exploit software, is not all that bad IMO.

I'm sorry I'm not trying to arguing with anyone.

I just think if you want to combat the evils of the internet then make the software available for everyone at a reasonable, affordable price. Stop the greed. It's like a police officer telling you, I'll protect you but you need to pay me a yearly fee.

Dear! You forgot that you pay taxes! Officer does not help you for free :)

OK, When everyone that wants the software has paid their lifetime payment. Who pays ongoing costs of the program.

Hosting fees for updates.

Researchers to actually keep the program updated.

What good is a program that does not have anywhere to get updates from or people to create those updates.

Do you see any adware toolbars or other monetizing items getting installed with the program? Does the FREE version prompt you to purchase BEFORE it cleans your computer like most other programs.

Also, may I remind you that Antivirus programs follow the same model (yearly payments)? I pay around $30-35 per year for Kaspersky Internet Security for 3 computers. This is no different than Malwarebytes' and yet a lot of users have no problem with that since you need an Antivirus on your system at the strict minimum (free or paid).

And after every other point of debate has been put to sleep, consider these:

  • You will easily spend 50 times the annual Malwarebytes subscription price in time, labor, software and losses just trying to recover from ONE malware attack.
  • You spend the annual Malwarebytes subscription price often for one bad pizza and never complain one bit.

If you consider WHAT YOU GET for the price you pay, arguments do not hold up.  If you want cheap, get your cousin to write it. Also, make sure to tell him when it doesn't work.
