Running ESET NOD32 Antivirus alongside with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium

Has anyone experienced this? Does it have a significant reduction in performance?

I know someone would answer like "never run two Antivirus software together"

Good evening my friends,

 

I have recently seen an abundance of questions regarding the usage of Malwarebytes and ESET together.

The old history of IT world has always been, never run two Antivirus software together.

The two big points regarding this are 1. Your system will slow down due to large amounts of resources given to protection software. 2. Its possible that real time scanning of the two might cause system halts landing on the same file or preventing execution together.

 

Some of the general pop. have experienced some concern with Malwarebytes possibly finding remnants or certain objects that ESET skipped or has not been added to their database. In my personal opinion of this, and i alone in this theory would like to answer with the possibility that Malwarebytes might have a larger index of Potentially Unwanted Applications then ESET, coupled with the strong registry object scans that Malwarebytes uses; and its a recipe for cleaning and not so much on the side of a payload file or main executable and/or service that is wreaking havoc. In my observations of finding 14 threats all with similar names and titles, Malwarebytes cleans and removes all files associated with the malware, including the registry entries corresponding.

I would like to share the following link for cleaning up Unwanted Software that ESET might not find, or decided was not software they felt made it into the blacklist of the VSD's.

On ESET's behalf i do feel that their database for Potentially Unwanted Applications is growing everyday.

 

The main reason for this guide is to make known that Malwarebytes is an Anti-Malware software solution, that covers a broad area of software that may potentially cause your computer harm, however it is not a Security Software nor an Antivirus solution that could be considered the only protection you use. The company has stated numerous times that its a solution that was built to be installed and ran along side your security protection.

I would like to also include wiki's list of Antivirus software. Malwarebytes is not included in the list, and i can only speculate why its not. List of Antivirus protection.

 

As short and sweet as i can be, i don't run ESET without MBAM, and i would not run MBAM without ESET either.

They work together great for what we call layered protection.

Although Malwarebytes doesnt have a few things ESET has like Anti-phishing, or Rootkit detection they do still research and attempt preventative measures.

They have an Anti Exploit program. A rootkit program.

They also have Endpoint and Enterprise Business platforms too.

The differences are from what i know publicly and what is built into the apps alone. Any corrections that should or need to be made will be made just PM me. This is simply to suggest it would not be a great idea to dismiss ESET and expect the same amount of protection without it.

MBAM scans in batch mode, rather than scanning all files opened, reducing interference if on-demand anti-virus software is also running on the computer. The paid version can perform scheduled scans, automatically scan files when opened, block IP addresses of malicious web sites, and quickly scan only open services, programs and device drivers. Malwarebytes is categorized as an anti-malware software alone.

 

Except my main concern is only about "ESET NOD32 Antivirus 7" and "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium" running together, so forget the ESET Security and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware free.

My main concern is if it has noticeable reduction in system performance when running the two together?

I have both products running together on my three systems (2x Win8.1 and Vista) and experience no slowdowns. Even running them on XP a few months ago gave me no issues.

If you're using an older Windows XP system then yes you probably will notice a slow down in performance.  If on the other hand you're using a recently new system with like an i5 processor and 4GB of RAM with Windows 7 or 8 then no you should not notice an appreciable difference in speed.  There will always be some difference between running with and without security software but in general one should not notice too much difference.

I've just installed MalwareBytes Pro yesterday alongside ESET Nod32 7.

 

I've not noticed any slowdown so far. I have tried Malwarebytes with F-Secure yesterday but I didn't feel secure with... F-Secure

I have had both MBAM and Eset AV running together on my PC for several years with no problems. I have exclusions for Eset set in MBAM and for MBAM set in Eset as per advice on this site.

 

Having updated MBAM to v2 I initially saw a fairly noticeable increase in CPU and disk activity when MBAM was scanning. On investigating further, I realised that my exclusions in Eset were set for "C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\nnn" which was the correct patyh for MBAM v1, but that MBAM v2 had installed itself in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware".

 

Notice that the apostrophe following "Malwarebytes" is no longer present in the directory name. I altered my exclusion list accordingly, and MBAM's performance is as before, with no noticeable performance issues.

I'm having major hesitation problems running MBAM v2 and ESET NOD32 on a 64bit Windows 7 PC with 12GB of RAM.

It’s particularly noticeable when closing Firefox tabs but the entire machine feels slow.

 

When all the MBAM processes are closed all is well.

I'd strongly suggest disabling real-time protection in MBAM as it may not only clash with ESET but also negatively affect system performance. It's crucial that only one real-time protection module runs at a time.

 

Can somebody please assist me or point me to a post with a solution?

This topic is quite old and based on an older version of MBAM (and probably ESET, too).
So, problems and solutions discussed here then may not apply now.
 
To address your question, MBAM Premium is designed and tested to run alongside all of the popular AVs.
It is a common response from the AV vendors to users with problems to request/demand removal of other security products, including MBAM.
While doing so temporarily is not unreasonable as troubleshooting step, the premise behind suggesting doing so permanently is based more on marketing than anything else.
 
Having said that, some users find that the proactive setting of mutual exclusions between MBAM Premium and their AV can optimize performance.
You might want to try that as a first step.
To set ESET NOD32 as a malware exclusion in MBAM, please refer to the attached screen shot as an example.
To exclude MBAM in ESET NOD32, please refer to the instructions below -- feel free to post back if you need more help.
 
Please post back and let us know if the exclusions resolve your issue.

I use Malwarebytes actively along side Eset Smart Security with out issues. My system is nowhere near as powerful. Dual Core with 5 GB Ram.

 

I've set the Eset exclusions in Malwarebytes as shown in the screenshot. They two Eset files maybe in a different location if you are just using the AV and not Smart Security however the file names shown are what you are looking for.
