  1. Thanks for this, @John L. Galt. Really appreciate you sharing your situation.

For now, we are not planning on adjust things like skins or layouts. The main reason for this is we'd like to have a controlled testing environment for all of the issues we're seeings, bugs being shared, features not working, etc. In short, we're trying to cut down on the possible variables.

In the future we can certainly consider this type of change!

How did you work with the old board and the white / lighter colors? Was there something within that version which helped with this?

What kind of server load does that generate?  I don't want 30 seconds to be set because it is a default, only to increase the lag users experience when posting replies / creating topics....

We're reviewing this with IPS. 60 seconds is simply the default and 30 seconds was their recommendation based on our site's configuration and load times they shared with us.

Invision also thinks that this Forum software and its Editor are good so what Invision states has to be taken with a grain of salt.

The caching and the non-caching have to be empirically tested and compared.  Then a value of zero or some value greater than zero, that best serves this Forum, can be properly determined.  However when I saw that a post I made took 5 to 10 minutes to be shown in a Recent Topic list, that was way too long.

While I understand you're frustrated with IPS, it's a bit harsh to state everything they say must be taken with a grain of salt.

Also appreciate you telling us how to test software. :) We're not changing things willy-nilly. Instead, we heard feedback on this widget, started to investigate a bit, learned a bit and share the latest with you and now we'll go back to testing a bit.

Because if it affects system resources to the point where there is a lag doing other things, then 30 seconds, even if it is a default and recommended option, is going to be detrimental to the users.

All these threads that we've been creating and replying to for the last few weeks are here because things were not tested thoroughly enough before being implemented. (At Mods / admins - yes, I also know why - not the scope of my rationale here).  So, just implementing the setting as determined by IPS to be the default, which we've already seen can and does cause issues, and doing so blindly, is not very good form, not logical, and certainly not effective.

That is why I asked what I did.  Before things are changed, things need to be evaluated.  And 60 seconds is not a very long time, most MBAM scans take longer than that.  If 60 seconds taxes the resources of the server far less than 30 seconds does, in terms of responsiveness / page load times / background scripting / post submission / attachment uploads / other things that users do, then it should be looked at as a much more viable alternative than 30 seconds.

    EDIT:  Ninja'd by David lol

Although I'm quoting you @John L. Galt, this is not directed at you but rather at all reading this thread.

The topic of this thread, the lag / CS / Marketo issues and the Topics vs Posts widgets are certainly related in some ways, but in other they are completely separate items and issues.

This thread is to discuss the Topics and Posts widgets: do we want them visible, what the caching period is, etc.

Lag issues - we are tracking this as a separate issue. Although it certainly could affect these widgets updating within their specified time (e.g. 60 seconds), it's a bigger issue across the site. In short, if the lag issues are gone, the caching period of the widgets being discussed in this thread are not causing delay or lag issues - it's actually working as expected and publishing the update to the widget within the specific setting.

Calling all of this out so we're on the same page with a few of the similar and dissimilar items here.

  3. Sounds like the consensus is to have Topics (which we'll rename to "Recent Topics") and to not have a Posts feed. Default is to show the last five topics so we'll keep it at that.

Additionally, the default setting to load this sidebar is set to 60 seconds - which means it can take up to 60 seconds to show up. We can adjust this and based on our setup, IPS recommends 30 seconds. So to be clear: this will be out-of-sync for up to 30 seconds.

Keep the thoughts coming in on this and we'll make a call soon.

Just asking, but is there any chance at all that IPS can make this a per user configuration?  That feed is a waste of my time and real estate, and I am not just lurking, I answer threads.

If not, then fine.  But I already have 2 inches of wasted real estate on either side of the actual forum content, and the white background kills my eyes, particularly later at night even with f.lux installed (See https://justgetflux.com/ for more info)

It's all or nothing. We're asking for the community to vote (thx for your vote!) here: https://forums.malwarebytes.org/topic/181430-topics-and-posts-widgets/

@msherwood is there a way of turning off the preview of the message on the right like is shown in the picture?

The list of messages on the left and the pane on the right, I would rather see a list of my PM's and then open them accordingly...

    Thanks

I don't think so as this appears be to how their framework is setup. Going to lock this thread and continue the chat over here with @AlexSmith.

My earlier post had a Quote that could not be removed by me ?? I then posted Sorry Aura, but I had trouble editing ?

I also added {{Why can I not stop "Auto Double Spacing" of paragraphs}} ?? This is now gone / edited by others ?? This is because there are times that we need to add "When You Have Finished," include the logs from - and we can list at times, 3 items below each other. This would mean.

    Item / 1

    Item / 2

    Item / 3

A shocking waste of space. We still need to waste time as this board has no Return To Top tag on each post, as most other versions / Forums do have, and for 20 posts of media, it is almost 1900, not mid to late 2010's.

The Topic Headings have not been updated to a better grouping system, where I thought you would have a more reasonable (read cleaner) definition of what you want the customer to see when they ""Walk in the front door"" and are guided to help that is wanted... The  Quote sign sends you to expect that you need to hit the  + every time you respond to a question..! !....

Please Note that I am not being nasty in any way, but some of the newer "organizers" need to go back to early / mid 2008 when Marcin responded mostly by himself to questions from users and provided what I thought was good and clear directions to them on how to use the program, and basic computer tips. I will try to remove my post that may have been a bit misplaced, but it generated some more interest than the High Fives here.

    Thank You -

EXTRA : Go back to the basics "Started by Gimpguy2000, 18 Jul 2007" Followed with a basic Q and  A type forum in early to mid 2008, and I joined later in 2008

We can certainly change the single vs double spacing if that's what people want. It's simply doing this because that's the default setting of v4. For now, we're trying to keep default settings (especially those related to only v4) set to default so we can troubleshoot (the change to v4) better. Again, open to adjust this if that's what a majority says they want.

Back to Top was just added this morning. FWIW, that's not a default option (or even an ACP option) and needed to be manually added (coded) to the theme (by IPS).

+ Quote / headers: are you saying it's confusing to a new user what they need to do when first coming to our site? Can you clarify here a bit more?

I'm not exactly following the last part of your post concerning going back to 2008 and the extra note. Can you clarify what you're suggesting we do / read up on?

What exactly is the function of the Disable Messenger option in the PM section?  Does it disable the view or does it disable the ability to receive messages?  If I disable it without knowing for sure I may not know how to get it back?

Can you clarify for me please?

    disable-messenger-1.jpg

This disables the Messenger feature for your account. If you disable it, you won't get messages. To enable again, click your name in the upper right and then messages - it will prompt you to enable. I flipped mine off and then back on again and the messages remained. Assume this is working as designed by would caution doing this as I don't truly know if they are kept around.

I think permissions related to profile editing were changed to discourage and cripple spammers that comes on the forums. Admins/Staff knows more about this than me, but I recall them mentionning it when people asked similar questions in the General Chat 1-2 months ago.

    ^ this.

@daman1 - we're going to be discussing this policy and seeing if we need to adjust it for users like you. It's a bit down in the priority list right now.

@msherwood  Michael, could it possibly enabled by default for regular members, and made into a switchable setting for all users experts or higher?  Or else just disabled for experts and higher?  Ron makes a great point, multiple spam posts in the same topic within a certain time period would only be appended together, making cleanup a lot easier, as well as from new users who get frantic and start semi-spamming their own help threads....

We can certainly discuss this. Right now we're still working through a few other items. Slowly getting to some of the lower priority stuff. :)

If you respond within 5 minutes of your previous post, it will merge them. We picked 5 minutes as we felt this was the windows of time where people would want their posts merged versus having one or more concurrent posts.

If you think 5 minutes is too high or low, let us know.

Also, @yardbird and @John L. Galt - we good on the other stuff in this thread or are there still open items?

I get that loss of cursor quite often.

Another issue is copy and paste to a thread, I get an error and have to select Ctrl key and Right click on mouse, that will open another box where you can paste into, when complete your pasted info goes to the top of the reply box, bit of PITA when you are actually trying to paste after mabe 2nd or 3rd step in a fix reply.

Another one is links in canned responses, they do not always work and just link back to the thread when selected. The links have to be relisted using editor link option, another real PITA when you consider we may use several canned responses in a reply, each one containing a couple of links, main and mirror...

I thought I was going crazy with the link issue. Submitted the bug to IPS.
