  1. Tell you what, if she is going to reinstall everything and plans not to have AV software installed, she is asking for it. Here is what you do. Reinstall everything just the way you want it (or she wants it). Then create a ghost image of the computer. This way when you have to redo the computer again, just restore the image. Restoring the image only takes about 20 min (of course it depends on how big the image is). That way she is back up and running in no time. We I know I can speak for most folks here on this forum, that we do not recommend running a computer without any protection.
  2. if you downloade the free version to your desktop you should have a file called mbam-setup.exe sitting on your desktop. Double click on that file and follow the on screen instructions to complete the install. Allow mbam to do an update at the end.
  3. Hope you are also using layered protection (ie. Antivirus software and Antimalware software (like MBAM))
  4. Mine are never quicker that 5 Minutes, it ranges from 5 minutes flat to about 10 minutes, depends which computer is being scanned, I do mine at my lunch hour so I an not concerned on how long it takes, cause when I come back from lunch it is done. Full scan I hardly run it but it ranges from 40 min. to 1.5 hours.
  5. I am no expert either, but viruses come from both email and also websites. From web sites they are coded into the website and you get them from drive-by downloads. All you have to do is visit a site that has malicious code on it and it installs onto your computer. Some of the adds that are on websites (coming from ad servers) are infected. Malwarebytes full version can help you get and stay protected by blocking some of these malicious web sites. Hope that answers your question.
  6. Just to add with what prairie dog stated (please follow his instructions --- in addition to these) Also to add, McAfee and Malwarebytes sometimes conflict with each other on some computers. Did you add exceptions to your McAfee antivirus software. Here is what you need to add to the exceptions list in your antivirus software. Please exclude the following files from your antivirus: Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well For Windows XP: C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys For 32 bit versions Windows Vista or Windows 7: C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7: C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys C:\Windows\SysWoW64\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys Please post back and let us know how it went.
  7. You are welcome, and its not trouble at all.... If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.
  8. Hello jmartinez, and welcome to Malwarebytes.org If you are in safe mode, and MBAM wont run in safe mode or in normal mode, then more than likely you may be infected with some malware on your box. Follow these directions listed below: We don't work on Malware removal in the general forums. Please print out, read and follow the directions here, skipping any steps you are unable to complete. Then post a NEW topic here. One of the expert helpers there will give you one-on-one assistance when one becomes available. 9. Another good program to see what is starting up with windows is CCleaner. You will open CCleaner the you click on Tools on the left panel then select Startup. You could just temporary disable any items you want, and if you find out you do need that item later, you could always go back and re-enable that item.
  10. daledoc1, if it was a SCHEDULED quick scan that started on its own at the time you selected, you will see appear and run the scan. Once the scan is complete it will close on its own and thats that. I believe that if the Scheduled quick scan did find and infection, the gui will stay open with the results so that you can then click on Show Results and then Remove the selected infections found. Hope that answers your question if not let us know.
  11. Use the CD as a coaster... and configure it manually like your old one is the best coarse of action, since you are familiar with the screens.
  12. Glad MBAM was able to help you fix all your issues and thanks for spreading the word about MBAM.
  13. To upgrade to the full version, there is no need to uninstall the free one. The free one and the full version use the same installer file. All you do is like you said, open MBAM Free > Protection > Purchase and go from there. You could also go to Malwarebytes Main Site and click on the Green Purchase Full Version button located on the left (down about the middle of the page). Once you receive your email with your purchase info enter your ID and Key and it will unlock the full version features.
  14. My bad, there is a typo in there, the rules file for Vista and Windows 7 is located in: C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref and as far as the mbam.sys maybe an expert or developer can help us on that one, I too can not find it from the Antivirus program to exclude it even though I am going to the C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys, but if I use Windows Explorer I can find the file listed just fine in the same folder. EDIT: maybe its something in the 64bit version of windows cause I see them ok in Windows 7 Pro 32bit.
  15. To enable the viewing of hidden and protected system files in Windows 7 please follow these steps: 1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop. 2. Click on the Start button. Located (Orb) in the lower left corner of your screen that has a Windows flag on it. 3. Click on the Control Panel menu option. 4. When the control panel opens look for Appearance and Personalization link. 5. Click on the Appearance and Personalization link. 6. You will now be in the Appearance and Personalization control panel. 7. Now click on the Show hidden files and folders option. 8. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files, folders, and drives. 9. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide extensions for known file types. 10. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files (Recommended). 11. Press the Apply button and then the OK button. You will now be at your desktop and Windows 7 will be configured to show all hidden files. 18. We need a little more info please? Like what operating system are you on? What is your Antivirus and firewall software? Have you, or do you have an infection?
  19. Hello ManBearPig, and welcome to Malwarebytes.... First you will get the edit feature after your post count reaches 50. Second, your antivirus will work with malwarebytes so long as you add the exclusions in the right locations as listed below. Also if you have any conflicts after doing these, the folks here will get you up and going. Please exclude the following files from your antivirus: Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well For 32 bit versions Windows Vista or Windows 7: C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7: C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys C:\Windows\SysWoW64\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys Please post back and let us know how it went.
  20. to reduce your scan times, you could run a program like CCleaner to remove temp files and other junk files before doing a scan.
  21. Nice work, look forward to the facelift....
  22. I use a USB stick, but my USB stick has a write protection switch that I have locked so viruses can not write or copy themselves to my USB Stick, but if you don't have one of those, then burn them to a CD like marktreg stated.
