"IPersist" error when trying to save changes

Recommended Posts

Hi. I originally had a thread going under the "Automatic updates don't work" topic. Here's a link directly to my first post:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.p...ost&p=43017

On the whole MBAM runs fine. But if I try to make any changes (like to the time to do automatic updates for example) I get the error shown at the link above and in the screen shot below. Automatic updates do not work also. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, used reg cleaners, manually removed all MBAM entries from the registry, used drive cleaners, manually removed MBAM files from the hard drive, you name it, I've tried it. Manually installing updates works perfectly by either using the icon by the clock in the system tray (right click, check for updates) or by opening the MBAM main window and then clicking on "check for updates". So, other than the error and the lack of auto-updates, the program works great and I love it!

(BTW- the problems started unbeknownst to me about 2 months ago. I went to try to change the time for updates and got an error, then noticed that the updates hadn't been installed in about 10 days; this was back in November 2008; and I have installed the new version 1.32 and it made no difference)

I have the exact same problem.

Seems to me it just happened with the 1.32 update, because I do not remember seeing this with 1.31?

Anywho, I cannot change any times in the scheduling or scan times.

I get the error trying to change either drop down menus

The program is also not updating automatically anymore or running quick scans since I cannot set the times.

I use standard US date format: mm/dd/yyyy and I don't use 24 hour time on my clock (10pm is 10pm and not 22:00).

I just discovered the "MBAM Clean Utility" in a different thread. I will try it tonight and we'll see if there's any changes... for those interested, the utility can be downloaded from this direct link: MBAM Clean Utility

I see there was a new program update this morning.

I installed it and I got an error at the end of the install.

Even though the new version installs and runs fine?

I still get the same error when trying to change the drop down menus shown in my post up above

I think I may have figured out why this is happening to everyone. I found 2 malwarebytes entries in control panel > scheduled tasks, I tried to 'run' them both and got a service could not start error. After further investigation I found that I had disabled the Task Scheduler service on my machine.

Check to see if your Task Scheduler service is running on your system.

Ahhhhh, Geekpro nailed it!!!!!

I also had two task showing in control panel/scheduled task, but I had disabled Task Scheduler in system services.

I changed Task Scheduler to automatic in xp services and then started the service.

I was then able to change the scheduling times in MB without the error.

Thanks mr geek for the help.

appreciate it.

Great, glad I could help.

Maybe Malwarebytes will send me a check for supporting their product.

I want everyone to send them an email demanding I receive some sort of compensation ;-0

Considering how many helpful people are here who do not get paid, I doubt anyone will send you anything for even a few helpful comments.

If you do want to get on the payroll for technical support, then hang around, help users as much as you can, learn as much as you can about the product, and take a course in malware removal from something like Malware Removal University. Marcin will eventually be hiring more people to handle support tickets when the work load gets heavier. :)

Well maybe not money, but he is the only one that offered any sort of help and I think that is awesome.

I did not see any sort of post from anyone at MB offering any sort of assistance.

Usually you see someone from software compnies/whatever asking additional questions trying to nail down the problem.

There was no attempt made on behalf of the authors in in this case, which made me wonder why I had purchased this product.

Look, I am just happy someone nailed it.

Now you can file this as case solved and knowledge that users can use in the future.

Thanks for the recognition EL34,

I was glad to help. As far as knowing everything about malware and going to malware school as was suggested. I really don't need to know a lot about malware to support an app, I just need to know why the app itself is not behaving properly and investigate the issue(s) and solve it for the users. If a company makes a product and can't investigate and solve its users issues then I'm sure the users will move to another product that does.

I'd be happy with a free 5 user license so I could install the app on all my machines :-)

You can email them to me with one click.

Actually, I don't normally respond when I notice multiple replies to a new topic. I spend most of my time on the support system, so if it looks like someone else is trying to help a user I won't stand over their shoulder.

Considering the fact that you did help out the people in this thread, I will ignore the ad for your forum. Just make sure that you don't advertise your forum here anymore (outside of a link to your site in your profile). Most of the experts here get very cantankerous when they see self-promotion, or someone promoting their own website. :D

A bit of advice from a customer and someone who likes to pay for software that is usefull.

If you see multiple people reporting the same exact issue, please take some time to ask additional questions to try and nail down the problem.

yes, I did manually, stop a service in XP that MB needed.

Many PC users do this to keep their machine lean and clean.

This happened a long time ago.

There's no way I can remember that I did that 2 years ago.

If this is something that MB needs to operate properly, please check for this during the intsall.

If this is not possible, add a note to the readme.txt file that you will need this service in order to get auto updates.

just throwing out some logic here to help keep customers happy. :D

Interesting thread, I have what I consider a "power user" setup of xp, having read thru black viper and the elder geek guides for services, security experts go ballistic when they see my HJT log, it's so short, but I wasn't about to disable task scheduler or ever read where I was advised to do so.

This thread confirms my belief about staying out of services and the registry if you don't have an advanced knowledge of both

So let me get this straight, you're saying it's the users fault and not how the app was written?

I mean if the app depends on a windows service, shouldn't it notify the user if that service is not running instead of just generating some cryptic error message?

Most of the apps that I run don't use Scheduled Tasks to run their updates or their scan schedules.

I tend to agree with you on this as I use HostsMan to manage my HOSTS file from hpHosts and MVPS HOSTS files and because they are large and the DNS Client service is enabled then long browser delays are encountered so HostsMan detects that it is running and stops it then sets it to Manual so that it does not start with Windows.

Please read about Task Scheduler service

I just think of this as an aid to my memory as I get older and more forgetful. It's used in conjunction with programs that like to run on a schedule, such as virus scanners, backups, defrag utilities, etc. If you can remember every task that needs to be done without help, disable this service.

I don't like yellow stickies all over my monitor to remind me of things as I find my system has a memory better than an Elephant when it is powered on.

Right, well I think Black Viper was the reason I disabled mine. If you you run the default XP services, I find a lot of them are just sucking ram and not being used, like 'remote registry' Don't need it, don't want it.
