stumpymattycat Posted April 10 Author ID:1629071 Share Posted April 10 Would say it might be a false positive, but what was happening in safe mode was really sus, so it might be correct. Gonna turn my pc off now. Also, apparently I did quarantine it!
MKDB Posted April 10 ID:1629079 Share Posted April 10 @stumpymattycat Please give me some time to review your logfiles. Thank you!
Solution MKDB Posted April 10 Solution ID:1629088 Share Posted April 10 @stumpymattycat First of all, I have good news: There is no active malware visible in the logfiles. 😉 Second, FRST shows that your harddisk (HDD from WesternDigital) has bad blocks: Error: (04/10/2024 05:56:18 PM) (Source: disk) (EventID: 7) (User: ) Description: The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block. You may want to back up all private data on an external drive just for safety / if you hard drive "dies". If you need further assistant regarding your hard drive, I'm pretty sure that @Porthos or @AdvancedSetup can move your topic to the correct subforum and give further tips. stumpymattycat Posted April 10 Author ID:1629089 Share Posted April 10 What actually is a bad block?
stumpymattycat Posted April 10 Author ID:1629092 Share Posted April 10 Also, can you explain why windows defender wasn't working while in safe mode in the beginning, as shown in the first picture? And why the scan didn't work either? I'm just curious, as that's why I was mostly concerned, as I was aware megahack could get false positives. Root Admin AdvancedSetup Posted April 10 Root Admin ID:1629098 Share Posted April 10 A bad block on a hard drive is an indicator that the drive is probably failing. How long the drive will last is unknown. It could be minutes or it could be years. It's prudent to backup all your personal data to an external USB hard drive and research purchasing a new replacement hard drive. Then install Windows on the new hard drive or transfer the operating system to the new drive You could easily go to bed one night and turn the computer off and in the morning the drive could fail and you'd lose all your data.
stumpymattycat Posted April 10 Author ID:1629127 Share Posted April 10 Another thing. Why were so many things duplicated in task manager? And also, my second question really wasn't answered. I'm sorry for asking so much stuff. Just want to be certain everything's alright.
Root Admin AdvancedSetup Posted April 10 Root Admin ID:1629136 Share Posted April 10 Those are quite normal. svchost runs a lot of things on Windows and is very normal. Nothing to worry about What is your second question?

stumpymattycat Posted April 10 Author ID:1629160 Share Posted April 10 BTW, how do I fix a bad block?
Root Admin AdvancedSetup Posted April 10 Root Admin ID:1629162 Share Posted April 10 No I cannot tell you why. You cannot fix a bad block. You buy a new hard drive
stumpymattycat Posted April 10 Author ID:1629164 Share Posted April 10 I don't have a new one at the minute, and it might take a while, but, when I do get one, how do I transfer things?
Root Admin AdvancedSetup Posted April 10 Root Admin ID:1629167 Share Posted April 10 There are many different ways. This looks to be similar to the drive already in the computer. https://www.newegg.com/blue-wd10ezex-1tb/p/N82E16822236339
stumpymattycat Posted April 10 Author ID:1629170 Share Posted April 10 As useful as that would be if I had a say in what hard drive I replaced it with, I unfortunately don't. My parents decide that. I do have an external hard drive by the way. Which one are you referring to when you mention the block? And finally, how do I actually transfer everything. Sorry I'm asking so much, but it's necessary.
Root Admin AdvancedSetup Posted April 10 Root Admin ID:1629184 Share Posted April 10 Plug the external hard drive into the computer. Then save the following zip file to your computer. Extract the contents (a batch file) and right-click over the batch file and select "Run as administrator" Then post back the results DiskParInfo.zip Thanks
stumpymattycat Posted April 10 Author ID:1629188 Share Posted April 10 As I said, I don't have a hard drive at the moment to do it with, and my parents don't seem to want to get me one for whatever reason. Not sure what to do. When I do get another one, it'll be a good bit of time, so what do I do? BTW, when I refer to an external hard drive, I mean it's already in use. More of my stuff is actually in there than the one in my pc.
Root Admin AdvancedSetup Posted April 10 Root Admin ID:1629190 Share Posted April 10 Well if you're unable to get another drive then there simply isn't much else we can do for you. Setup a Microsoft OneDrive account and make sure you backup data that you feel is important to you. It's not really a backup drive but can keep copies of many files for you. stumpymattycat Posted April 10 Author ID:1629191 Share Posted April 10 I'll be going to bed now, so don't expect me to respond, but I'm likely to get a hard drive in the future, just not soon. I need instructions for when I do get one. It could be as soon as a few months.
stumpymattycat Posted April 10 Author ID:1629194 Share Posted April 10 So, for when I do get one, can you send me some instructions for me to follow then?
Root Admin AdvancedSetup Posted April 10 Root Admin ID:1629197 Share Posted April 10 I don't have step by step instructions but there are many videos and blogs on how to do. We can tackle it when you're ready
stumpymattycat Posted April 12 Author ID:1629739 Share Posted April 12 Is there a way to repair the data that's already been lost?
David H. Lipman Posted April 12 ID:1629745 Share Posted April 12 Not if you did not make a backup of said data. Hardware is cheap Data is expensive
stumpymattycat Posted April 12 Author ID:1629794 Share Posted April 12 (edited) My pc seems to be running quite slowly. Is there a chance that could be related to the bad blocks? It is still running though. Edited April 12 by stumpymattycat Important to clarify
