Malwarebytes server error

Recommended Posts

I have a free version 3.1.2.1733 and I'm unable to update - I get the well known error "Unable to contact update server." I also get the "Unable to contact license server." Which means I had to troubleshoot this connecting to server problem. I did the steps written here but encountered a problem when I wanted to do a clean removal. Or rather, download a file from http://downloads.malwarebytes.org, where the clean removal tool is located at.

I got this error [see attached picture], and it didn't matter what file I tried to download from malwarebytes downloads, I was never able to connect to it. I enabled all the pop-ups, disabled ad-blocking. I even tried the incognito mode but the same thing happened.

Now I'm thinking maybe whatever is causing this error is also causing the "Unable to contact update server" error in Malwarebytes, or am I wrong? Any ideas? (I have disabled AV and firewall while attempting this, all of the malwarebytes .exe files are also added as exceptions).

Thanks.

Hello @Lethevert and welcome:

Although a successful browser connection can still be made using your URL above, the legacy version of the mbam-clean-2.3.0.1001.exe utility has been superseded by the MB-Clean support tool.  Therefore, only if an MB3 clean install does not resolve the system's "Unable to contact update server." issue, please proceed to the steps that follow:

  1. Please save your work and close all running user applications for your convenience. applications for your convenience.
  2. Please follow the steps within the locked/pinned topic at Having problems using Malwarebytes? Please follow these steps.

  3. In your next reply to this topic, please only ATTACH the three (3) separate files that are developed above: mb-check-results.zip, FRST.txt, and Addition.txt.

Thank you.

Okay that's great, I'll try do to a clean install first... OH WAIT, I can't access the server and download the tool!

Sorry for the sarcasm there, I couldn't help it :D... anyway, like I said, it doesn't matter which file I try to download, I can't access Malwarebytes downloads and I can't even do a clean install to begin with.

But thanks anyway!

@Lethevert

Please use the download link on this help-portal link-page

scroll down to the section "What are the steps to use MB-Clean"

download link is there.  Along with how-to write-up.

Looking back on your thread, the first link was for the old version 2 program.

Now then, you mention you are or had been seeing a message  "Unable to contact license server.".  If that repeats, you would need to make a help request on the consumer customer helpdesk since that indicates a issue with either the license or something that is interfering with the verification for license activation.

That link is this

But since you indicate that you are running in free mode, license issue ought not to be the case.

This will help us figure this out.

  1. Create and obtain Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) logs
  1. Download FRST and save it to your desktop
NOTE: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit
  2. Double-click to run FRST and when the tool opens click "Yes" to the disclaimer
  3. Press the "Scan" button
  4. This will produce two files in the same location (directory) as FRST: FRST.txt and Addition.txt
    NOTE:
These two files will be collected by the MB-Check Tool and added to the zip file for you
  1. Create and obtain an mb-check log
  1. Download MB-Check and save to your desktop
  2. Double-click to run MB-Check and within a few second the command window will open, then click "OK"
  3. This will produce one log file on your desktop: mb-check-results.zip
  4. Attach this file to your forum post by clicking on the "Drag files here to attach, or choose files..." or simply drag the file to the attachment area

@Lethevert

Do do as Porthos has suggested.

as to the browser issue, my thought is that it is not handling HTTPS requests

Perhaps try a different browser.   if no joy, just simply change the https to http in the browser address bar text box ( to make the mod) and tap Enter
