Thanks for the information, Exile. I learned something new today I didn't know that you couldn't uninstall IE. Probably a good thing, although rolling back to IE6 is a bad idea, I totally agree. -

lost456, welcome to the forums here at Malwarebytes.org Just to add to what marktreg said, you also need to keep it for checking manually for updates for your computer if you are using Windows 2000 or XP. Leave Internet Explorer alone. It's always good to have a backup browser in case you need it, plus for the two reasons above -

Hi wizzzzard, and welcome to the forums here at Malwarebytes.org You shouldn't run Combofix unless you either know exactly what you are doing or are being guided by an expert to use it, so hopefully one of those two things was at work when you used Combofix At any rate, the malware probably damaged your settings for updates to occur. Please see if if the following helps you to restore it. If not, you may still be infected and will need to visit the malware removal forum. Thank you Please do the following to see if it corrects it: Step 1: Verify Internet Connectivity of Internet Explorer: Backup the Registry: Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so. Please download ERUNT from here ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. Double click on erunt-setup.exe to Install ERUNT by following the prompts. Use the default install settings but say NO to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish. Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process. Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\Windows\ERDNT which is acceptable. [*]Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected. [*]Click on OK [*]Then click on YES to create the folder. If you are having any problems with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware protection please do the following. 1. Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware using Add/Remove programs in the control panel. 2. Restart your computer (very important). 3. Download and run this utility. 4. It will ask to restart your computer (please allow it to). 5. After the computer restarts, install the latest version from here. Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via e-mail.

@ catscomputer Ack! So we are not alone! What a crap! That was so annoying. It hasn't done it in a long time, maybe a Windows Update or something fixed it, I dunno. I am pretty sure it happened to our computer too (mostly just) when it was left on for an extended period of time. I don't think our next puter will be a Dell I don't like them too much... heh

Each license is good for a LIFEtime (not an annual subscription). They can be transferred to a new computer in the future as long as proper removal is done on the old machine (which we can provide directions for if/when you need them). Hi Andy, I think that this is normal, IE does this too. I notice that when more than a couple tabs are open in IE, there are multiple IE processes in the Task manager, same thing happens with Chrome. Is this happening when you have more than two tabs open at a time in Chrome? I think that this is because each tab functions as its own process so if one freezes up on you, you don't lose them all. Hopefully someone who knows for sure (I am about 99.9% sure) can verify this for you -

Oh, okay. Well, there's probably some remnants in the registry and such at least from Norton, even if its uninstalled, unless the removal tool was used. Alright, cool. You can reply in this thread to let me know what you decide (and again, no hurries of course, I'm on here frequently, usually daily but sometimes I take a "break", hehe) or you can send me a Private Message and we can start a new thread in the PC Help forum where we can continue this (which would probably actually be more appropriate since we are no longer discussing Malwarebytes itself). -

Awesome, I'm glad that you have the UAC on MSE is an antimalware and antivirus program (but can be used with Mbam of course) and IF used will replace or at least disable Windows Defender, yes. If you choose to go with MSE, it will disable Windows Defender as far as I know, and you should only use ONE antivirus at a time, as more than one running at a time can cause conflicts and even lower your security protection! Also, when you changed from Norton to AVG, did you uninstall Norton first? If so, did you use the cleanup tool? If you did not, I can link you to that. You should run that even if you don't switch from AVG, just to make sure that you are clear of any remnants Prior to doing this, make sure that no other Norton or Symantec anti-virus or LiveUpdate products are installed on your computer. You are very welcome! Again, let me know if you want to change AV's, let me know which one, I will give you the download link and AVG removal tool and instructions. -

User Account Control When trying to update something (other than your AV) such as Adobe Reader, or trying to open something that needs Administrative permissions (such as a .exe file) a prompt will come up asking for your permission to continue. You are welcome for the welcome Alrighty, I am not sure how to overcome your particular issue then (I just wanted to see if you could test to see if it would auto-update via the Admin account, even if you don't want to normally do so, just to make sure that your auto-update was working correctly).
