  1. Just to add to what noknojon said - Malwarebytes cannot be run from a CD or a flash drive, but you can transfer the setup file and update files from a CD or flash drive. A CD transfer is recommended for usage on severely infected computers.
  2. Wait, Buttons, are you talking about Website security or general computer security?
  3. Thanks for the information, Exile. I learned something new today I didn't know that you couldn't uninstall IE. Probably a good thing, although rolling back to IE6 is a bad idea, I totally agree.
  4. lost456, welcome to the forums here at Malwarebytes.org Just to add to what marktreg said, you also need to keep it for checking manually for updates for your computer if you are using Windows 2000 or XP. Leave Internet Explorer alone. It's always good to have a backup browser in case you need it, plus for the two reasons above
  5. Hi wizzzzard, and welcome to the forums here at Malwarebytes.org You shouldn't run Combofix unless you either know exactly what you are doing or are being guided by an expert to use it, so hopefully one of those two things was at work when you used Combofix At any rate, the malware probably damaged your settings for updates to occur. Please see if if the following helps you to restore it. If not, you may still be infected and will need to visit the malware removal forum. As a side note, when replying, please use the "ADD REPLY" button at the bottom of the page. Thank you Please do the following to see if it corrects it: Step 1: Verify Internet Connectivity of Internet Explorer: Backup the Registry: Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so. Please download ERUNT from here ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. Double click on erunt-setup.exe to Install ERUNT by following the prompts. Use the default install settings but say NO to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish. Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process. Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\Windows\ERDNT which is acceptable. [*]Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected. [*]Click on OK [*]Then click on YES to create the folder. Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe Once you've done your backup, please do the following: Click on Start and select Run In the Run box copy and paste the text in the following code box exactly as written and press Enter or click on OK:REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings" /v GlobalUserOffline /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f Try updating again and if it does not work then please proceed to Step 2 Step 2: Verify Your Internet Connection Settings: Open Internet Explorer Note: It MUST be Internet Explorer, not Firefox, Opera, Chrome or any other internet browser [*]Click on Tools at the top and select Internet Options Note: If you do not see Tools, press the Alt key on your keyboard and it will show up [*]Click on the Connections tab [*]Click on the LAN settings button [*]Under Automatic configuration make sure that the box next to Automatically detect settings is checked, if it is not, then click the box next to it to check it [*]Under Proxy server make sure that the box next to Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections). is not checked and if it is, click the box next to it to uncheck it [*]Click on the OK button to close the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window [*]Click on the OK button to close the Internet Options window [*]Try updating Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware again to see if it now works correctly Now try updating Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware once more and if it does not work then please proceed to Step 3 Step 3: Exclude Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware's Files and Folders From Other Active Security Programs: For Windows XP: C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys For Windows Vista or Windows 7: C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7: C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\zlib.dll C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys C:\Windows\SysWoW64\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known AV products.
  6. I'm glad that you were able to solve your problem Don't hesitate to post if you need any help in the future though.
  7. Chrisk-K, I'm glad that Malwarebytes was able to help you out I hope Malwarebytes lives up to your expectations and provides you with the excellent protection that you need for years and years to come! I know I'll never go without it again
  8. Hi RR9445, and welcome to the forums here at Malwarebytes.org Try the following and let me know if that does the trick for you Please use the "ADD REPLY" button when replying. Thanks. If you are having any problems with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware protection please do the following. 1. Uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware using Add/Remove programs in the control panel. 2. Restart your computer (very important). 3. Download and run this utility. 4. It will ask to restart your computer (please allow it to). 5. After the computer restarts, install the latest version from here. Note: You will need to reactivate the program using the license you were sent via e-mail.
  9. heheh cute I've heard this one for Ford too (backwards): Found on Road Dead Driver Returns on Foot Although Ford's reliability is supposed to be really great now, from what I've heard.
  10. @ catscomputer Ack! So we are not alone! What a crap! That was so annoying. It hasn't done it in a long time, maybe a Windows Update or something fixed it, I dunno. I am pretty sure it happened to our computer too (mostly just) when it was left on for an extended period of time. I don't think our next puter will be a Dell I don't like them too much... heh
  11. Hi Chris, and welcome to the forums here at Malwarebytes.org Yes, you will need to purchase one license for each computer that you wish to install Malwarebytes Paid onto. Each license is good for a LIFEtime (not an annual subscription). They can be transferred to a new computer in the future as long as proper removal is done on the old machine (which we can provide directions for if/when you need them). When replying, please use the "Add Reply" button at the bottom of the page. Thank you Edit: Good catch prairie dog, not sure how I forgot about that
  12. Hi Andy, I think that this is normal, IE does this too. I notice that when more than a couple tabs are open in IE, there are multiple IE processes in the Task manager, same thing happens with Chrome. Is this happening when you have more than two tabs open at a time in Chrome? I think that this is because each tab functions as its own process so if one freezes up on you, you don't lose them all. Hopefully someone who knows for sure (I am about 99.9% sure) can verify this for you
  13. Hello Selffaw, and welcome to the forums here at Malwarebytes.org Please read the following: We don't work on Malware removal in the general forums. Please read and follow the directions here, skipping any steps you are unable to complete. Then post a NEW topic here. One of the expert helpers there will give you one-on-one assistance when one becomes available. Please note that it may take 48 hours or more for you to receive a response in the malware removal forum, as it is often busy at times. Please do not reply to your own post asking for help unless its been more than 48 hours since you originally posted, as this can make it appear as though you are being helped and take longer for you to get help. If you are unable to do all or any of the steps in the link to the directions above, just post your problem into the forum I gave you a link to anyway and someone will be able to assist you. Also, when replying, please use the "ADD REPLY" button or erase what the person you are replying to said, as this makes the forum easier to read. Thank you
  14. sweet! Glad that worked for you If you still have issues with this though, feel free to email the address I gave you above. Also, please use the "ADD REPLY" button at the bottom of the page when replying. Thanks
  15. Alrighty You are very welcome!! I'm happy that I was able to help you out!
  16. Awesome Oh, sorry. hehe. Just click the "Private Message" link in blue I gave you. It will take you right to where you can send me a message. (I made it easy for you )
  17. Oh, okay. Well, there's probably some remnants in the registry and such at least from Norton, even if its uninstalled, unless the removal tool was used. Alright, cool. You can reply in this thread to let me know what you decide (and again, no hurries of course, I'm on here frequently, usually daily but sometimes I take a "break", hehe) or you can send me a Private Message and we can start a new thread in the PC Help forum where we can continue this (which would probably actually be more appropriate since we are no longer discussing Malwarebytes itself).
  18. Awesome, I'm glad that you have the UAC on MSE is an antimalware and antivirus program (but can be used with Mbam of course) and IF used will replace or at least disable Windows Defender, yes. If you choose to go with MSE, it will disable Windows Defender as far as I know, and you should only use ONE antivirus at a time, as more than one running at a time can cause conflicts and even lower your security protection! Also, when you changed from Norton to AVG, did you uninstall Norton first? If so, did you use the cleanup tool? If you did not, I can link you to that. You should run that even if you don't switch from AVG, just to make sure that you are clear of any remnants Prior to doing this, make sure that no other Norton or Symantec anti-virus or LiveUpdate products are installed on your computer. You are very welcome! Again, let me know if you want to change AV's, let me know which one, I will give you the download link and AVG removal tool and instructions.
  19. User Account Control When trying to update something (other than your AV) such as Adobe Reader, or trying to open something that needs Administrative permissions (such as a .exe file) a prompt will come up asking for your permission to continue. It's an EXCELLENT security feature in Vista and up. Avira. Here is their homepage: http://www.avira.com/en/solutions/home_home_office.html MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials), provided by Microsoft. Here is the info page: http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/ Avast! http://www.avast.com/index that is free as well, although some users have been reporting issues between its newest version and Malwarebytes, although this should be fixed now. Take a look at the different pages, and I can provide you with the download link for whatever you choose, as well as instructions on how to properly remove AVG and then install your new AV
  20. You are welcome for the welcome Alrighty, I am not sure how to overcome your particular issue then (I just wanted to see if you could test to see if it would auto-update via the Admin account, even if you don't want to normally do so, just to make sure that your auto-update was working correctly). Please e-mail the helpdesk support@malwarebytes.org describing your problem and/or link back to this topic if you wish
