Please download TCPView from Microsoft at the following link:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinte...s/bb897437.aspx

This utility will monitor everything that is accessing the Internet or your local network. All you have to do is run TCPView, and then run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and start the update. Watch TCPView to see if mbam.exe shows up in the list. It will be pretty obvious, because it highlights it in green.

I need to know what "Remote Address" Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is trying to connect to. Once it shows up in the list, you can right-click on the line for mbam.exe, and select 'Copy' in order to paste it into a reply. It will tell me what I need to know. Below is an example of what the line you are looking for will look like:

mbam.exe:3656	TCP	vista-x64:52135	cdn-208-111-168-7.ord.llnw.net:http	ESTABLISHED

Done...but nothing shows up other than the standard processes.

(ex: firefox.exe:684 TCP posthumanti:3585 localhost:3584 ESTABLISHED )

I had been using Malwarebytes for two years, it worked before and then I updated to the newer version last week and it has not been able to update the database since. I was having the same problem with my other pc (but it was running vista and after resetting the LAN settings it is working fine and updated today...sorry not the most technically adept...have been out of IT for ten years now :-)

If it doesn't show up, then I'm not entirely sure where to go next. Please uninstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, restart your computer, run the utility at the following link, restart your computer again, and then reinstall Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-clean.exe

Done ...twice...no update. Even went back to download the setup file again...Ran the TCPView and again mbam.exe does not show up at all when it tries to update as part of the setup process , and/or when I select from the program itself.

I tried running ONLY malwarebytes when trying to update...i.e., no browser or any other app running...TCPView showed the following two 'processes':

java.exe:2184 TCP 127.0.0.1:3754 127.0.0.1:32000 ESTABLISHED

Wrapper.exe:1508 TCP 127.0.0.1:32000 127.0.0.1:3754 ESTABLISHED

...as mentioned earlier, I have been out of this biz for a while, not sure if that is normal or not...obviously I can get on-line, and to Malwarebytes.org...I am stumped...I recommended loading this on many friends machines in the past...and to date it has been great at finding and getting rid of the few viruses that have found their way onto my pcs...any other suggestions.

Are you using Internet Explorer? Is it set to work Online? Do you have a proxy set with IE? Even if you use Firefox or another browser IE has to be fully functional to get updates.

Have you disabled your Firewall and Anti-Virus for testing?

This is what the error code means.

Internal MBAM error code

Error 732: Error updating the database or product. Check Internet connectivity.

Microsoft error code

12029 ERROR_INTERNET_CANNOT_CONNECT

The attempt to connect to the server failed.

These codes confirm that "something" is blocking access to the update servers which are not related or connected to our main malwarebytes.org site.

I would disable both your Anti-Virus and Firewall temporarily and then try to update again. If that does not work then please follow the directions below. Make sure you re-enable your Anti-Virus and Firewall once you're done testing.

We don't work on Malware removal in the general forums.

Please print out, read and follow the directions here, skipping any steps you are unable to complete. Then post a NEW topic here.

One of the expert helpers there will give you one-on-one assistance when one becomes available.

After posting your new post make sure under options that you select Track this topic and choose one of the Email options so that you're alerted when someon has replied to your post.

Thanks...was using Firefox but had checked permissions and on-line setting for IE, even tried using IE as default with default settings. I did disable all of the above security/firewalls...to no avail. i gave up and went to sneaker net to copy the rules.ref file from this vista machine and flashdrive loaded to my XP machine...the XP is primarily for off-line work anyway so will run the new upgrade and see if anything shows up...thanks anyway to both of you...much appreciated. If anything comes up in the scan, or if I I can access the upgrade after scanning, I will let you know.

This worked for me: Go to the control panel, then to internet options, and then to the connections tab. Click the LAN Settings button and make sure all three buttons are unchecked.

I had the same problem with both MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware --- wouldn't update.

Don't know why changing the settings worked --- or how they got "wrong". Good luck.

Possible Cause:

This can happen during an upgrade to IE 8 or during a malware attack. I have seen cases where IE's automatic settings can become disabled, and Proxy settings can be enabled. This will cause Internet Explorer to lose connectivity in a LAN environment, while everything else can connect. IE 8 can be installed knowingly, or come through Windows Update automatically and not be noticed until you go to run it.

For the Malwarebytes updates to work, you must be able to browse the web through IE.

To check on this, do the following

1) Open Internet Explorer 8

2) Go to the Tools menu

3) Select Internet Options

4) Go to the Connection Tab

5) Click the LAN Settings button

6) Check the first friendly box you see (right at the top): Automatically Detect Settings

Hope that helps. Surf safe,

-G

I just wanted to let you know that I was having this same problem, but this worked for me. I think the problem was that the button "use a proxy server" was clicked, it was the only one checked, and when I unchecked it the upload worked.

Anyways, thanks for the suggestion! That worked for me!

Hi

I have the same problem and have been unable to auto update MBAM for some time now (about 3 months) - I have been uninstalling and re-installing new versions instead (which works) but is obviously very tedious

I have followed the instructions above regarding TCPView and MBAM does show up when i try to update

Here is the results:

mbam.exe:1084 TCP nicksdesktop:1101 74-115-6-57.anchorfree.com:http SYN_SENT

Is this where it should be trying to connect to?

Cheers
