Operating System Upgrade

Recommended Posts

I need to upgrade my Home desktop PC from WIN 8.1 to WIN 10 soon due to MS ending support for 8.1 and I want to know how to migrate my Malwarebytes subscription with the upgrade so I won't have to pay for a new subscription. Any suggestions? ( I can't find any way to send this question directly to the Malwarebytes support department.)

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

Are you doing an upgrade install or are you going to wipe and clean install 10?

claudiubo - Thanks. That looks plausible.  I saw the Support Tool when I was browsing the site but when I scanned it I thought it wouldn't work due to the serial number would be missing for the installation due to the install being on (in effect) a new PC. So if the license key is carried from the uninstall to the re-install via a file embedded in the re-install setup that should work. Thanks again for your help.

You never answered the million dollar question. Are you trying the in place upgrade or starting fresh with 10. Once we know that I can give you the best advice/ instruction.

Porthos - this will be an upgrade on my existing 8.1 PC. I have been on several forums and corresponding with the makers of various programs and the majority advise that many "applications" will not migrate - they must be re-installed into the new OS therefore creating a risk of having to re-purchase licenses to do so.  Sorry about my gaffe of considering claudiubo's suggestion but I'm new to this forum and not familiar with the "hierarchy" therein.  So, what is your advice/instruction?

\when you are ready to upgrade. Be sure to take a screenshot of your key just in case. Then Turn off start with Windows.

Then Quit Malwarebytes from the system tray by right clicking on it.

Then proceed with your Windows upgrade.

Are you using any other 3rd party AV programs?

Okay. Everything appears quite straightforward in your instructions. Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it.

If something does go wrong, you mentioned I should keep a screenshot of the "key" just in case. Does that mean there is somewhere in the MB program that I can type in the license key and it'll be accepted and I can just carry on using it?

Just in case your computer crashes and will not start and you have to reinstall Windows.

You should have it in your my.malwarebytes.com account already though.

Also keep in mind that the computer will need to be replaced after Oct 2025 when Win 10 updates stop.

In fact, you did not understand my suggestion.

1. download the support tool from here: https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mbst

2.run the support tool, and choose  Advanced Options, click Clean.

3.Malwarebytes will be uninstalled and the key will be saved on a text file.

4.Choose  not to reinstall Malwarebytes.

5. save that text file on an USB stick

6.Upgrade PC to Win10

7.reinstall Malwarebytes using the serial saved on USB stick.
