Google Chrome Browser w/ Annoying Mcafee Pop ups

Recommended Posts

So I was using a website service for my computer called canirunit.

I used the service once before without problems a few years back.  However, after downloading an exe file I get this annoying Mcafee pop up every time i opened google chrome.  I can't close it and I am not clicking on it either.

Malwarebytes does not show any attacks on my computer, but I am a bit skeptical of it's judgement.  Any thoughts on what I should do?

Thanks

It sounds like an issue with the push notifications feature in Chromium based browsers (which includes MS Edge).  Please see if the instructions in this Malwarebytes Labs article help or not.

Please let us know how it goes and if the issue still persists.

Thanks

Hello @Protos97

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system.
You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply as well.

Thank you

Hello @Protos97

You have the WebAdvisor by McAfee installed. I may be wrong, but I'm not sure they offer a free service anymore or not as the webpage for the free one does not exist.

There are better tools with uBlock Origin and Malwarebytes Browser Guard that can help protect against bad websites.

You may want to consider uninstalling the WebAdvisor by McAfee

Go to Control Panel, Programs, Programs and Features

Scroll to the bottom and it should show

WebAdvisor by McAfee (HKLM-x32\...\{35ED3F83-4BDC-4c44-8EC6-6A8301C7413A}) (Version: 4.1.1.590 - McAfee, LLC)

Inside Internet Explorer as well

BHO: McAfee WebAdvisor -> {B164E929-A1B6-4A06-B104-2CD0E90A88FF} -> C:\Program Files\McAfee\WebAdvisor\x64\IEPlugin.dll [2021-05-14] (McAfee, LLC -> McAfee, LLC)
BHO-x32: McAfee WebAdvisor -> {B164E929-A1B6-4A06-B104-2CD0E90A88FF} -> C:\Program Files\McAfee\WebAdvisor\win32\IEPlugin.dll [2021-05-14] (McAfee, LLC -> McAfee, LLC)

You also have this folder

c:\Program Files\McAfee
