Computer using high cpu and shuts down randomly with no warning

Recommended Posts

Hello,

A while back I accidentally installed malware on my computer but I eventually wiped it off of my computer with no traces of it (as far as I know). However, I don't think my computer has ever recovered. After the infection, its cpu usage has always been incredibly high and the fan sounds like it's working hard to keep it from overheating. Not only that, but it can get a little laggy at times and overheats way more now when I play games (I'm using a gaming laptop). Whenever I do scans malwarebytes and adwcleaner does not pick up anything anymore, I moved all of the non OS files to my D drive, and the windows File Repair does not detect any files in need of being fixed. Does this have to do with the past infection or is my computer hardware breaking down? This laptop is only a year old and I do not want to have to completely wipe it...

Greetings,

It definitely sounds like there may be some sort of malware still hiding on the system, or at the very least some kind of fallout/components from the infection that it left behind.  I would recommend that you read and follow the instructions in this topic and then create a new topic in the malware removal area including the logs and requested info by clicking here and one of our malware removal specialists will assist you as soon as one becomes available.

They should be able to diagnose what's going on, and if it is malware related, remediate the issue and eliminate any remaining threats which will hopefully resolve the problem, but if not, then they will do what they can and then ask you to return here for further troubleshooting or provide additional info on how to get help or other options you might try to fix the issues you're experiencing.

Good luck, and I hope that this problem is resolved quickly.  Thermal issues can be the worst (I'm speaking from first-hand experience having dealt with them on numerous occasions myself in the past) but hopefully they'll be able to help you to fix whatever it is that's going on with the system and get it running properly once more.

Thanks for the reply! I followed these directions in a past post I made about the infection and they said that there were no traces of infection at all, which is why I'm a little frustrated with my computer acting strange... should I do another farbar scan just to make sure nothing happened in the past few months?

Ah, I see.  Yes, fresh logs would help, in fact, rather than running Farbar on its own, please go ahead and do the following (it includes FRST/Farbar and runs it automatically so you won't need to run it separately):

  1. Download and run the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Accept the EULA and click Advanced tab on the left (not Start Repair)
  3. Click the Gather Logs button, and once it completes, attach the zip file it creates on your desktop to your next reply

@AdvancedSetup could you take a look at her system/logs when you get a chance?  I just want to make certain there is no malware/cryptocurrency miners on her system given the symptoms (AdvancedSetup is one of our resident malware removal and general troubleshooting experts, so if there is an issue, he'll likely be able to find it).

I accidentally clicked Start Repair without thinking (I'm very impulsive) and now it's stuck on Running Repair Process -_- I've also noticed that the actual Malwarebytes application has disappeared from my laptop and I have no idea where it went... should I be alarmed?

The logs are not showing any real specific infections. The A-Volute VR software keeps crashing and the Windows Defender is crashing (which is not a good sign) Let me have you run the following though and see if it helps any or not.

This will also run a FULL Disk Check on your drive. It may take a few hours to complete, please let it run to completion.

Please download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop.
NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST or FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.

Run FRST or FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please attach or post it to your next reply.

Note: If the tool warned you about an outdated version please download and run the updated version.

fixlist.txt

Thanks, Ron

Great, now let's see if we can get the log from the disk check.

Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run dialog, type powershell.exe, and press Enter.

In PowerShell, copy and paste the command below, and press Enter

get-winevent -FilterHashTable @{logname="Application"; id="1001"}| ?{$_.providername –match "wininit"} | fl timecreated, message | out-file Desktop\CHKDSKResults.txt

CHKDSKResults.txt file will be created on your desktop, that is the log file of your chkdsk scan results from Event Viewer.

Please upload that file on your next reply

Looks good, nothing out of the normal. Index cleanups are very normal.

I've moved your topic to the Malware Removal forum though so that we can do some scans just to make sure. Please run the following when you have time. I'll check back as soon as I can this weekend.

Please run the following steps and post back the logs as an attachment when ready.

STEP 01

  • If you're already running Malwarebytes 3 then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • If you don't have Malwarebytes 3 installed yet please download it from here and install it.
  • Once installed then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • Once the scan is completed click on the Export Summary button and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find, and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If Malwarebytes won't run then please skip to the next step and let me know on your next reply.

STEP 02

Please download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes and save the file to your Desktop.

  • Right-click on the program and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
  • Accept the Terms of use.
  • Wait until the database is updated.
  • Click Scan Now.
  • When finished, please click Clean & Repair.
  • Your PC should reboot now if any items were found.
  • After reboot, a log file will be opened. Copy its content into your next reply.

RESTART THE COMPUTER Before running Step 3

STEP 03
Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). If you've, run the tool before you need to place a check mark here.
  • Please attach the Additions.txt log to your reply as well.

Thanks

Ron

The computer seems to be running normally now, it's no longer shutting down on its own, the cpu usage is 10% less than it was before, and the fan isn't working as hard to cool my computer down. I think my computer is back to normal now, but I'll have to see how it holds up when I'm gaming.

Thank you so much for the help!
