Getting redirected to the FBI scam site question

Sorry if this has been discussed already.

I was online and then I all of the sudden got redirected to one of those FBI scamsites that lock up your browser and tell you to pay up and stuff.

After ending the task through the task manager, I immediately updated my AV (Malwarebytes of course) and scanned it.

The scan turned out to not find anything.

However, seeing as I'm paranoid, I wanna know if I'm safe.

Have I gotten a virus that my AV can't detect or not.

Basically, I'm asking if I should reformat my computer or not.

Thanks for your replies and happy new year! :)

In addition to David's expert advice....

If you're not sure what's going on with your system, please feel free to have one of our malware experts help to check it.

We cannot perform that sort of work here in this sub-forum.

So I suggest that you might want to please follow the advice in this pinned topic: Available Assistance For Possibly Infected Computers.
It explains the options for free, expert help >>AND<< the suggested preliminary steps to expedite the process.
A malware analyst will assist you with looking into your issue.

Thanks,

Hi, again:

A diligent forum member has aptly pointed out that MBAM is NOT an Antivirus (AV).

This article explains it: Does Malwarebytes Anti-Malware replace antivirus software?

Under the circumstances, if you were surfing the net with "outdated" MBAM and no AV, then you might indeed want to follow the advice offered above, to have a malware expert help you to check the system for infection?

Just a thought.

Thank you again,

I do have AV.
I use Windows Essentials for live protection.
I also scanned my computer with it after the fact just to be sure.

There is no anti malware called "Windows Essentials".  There is a "Windows Live Essentials" but that is a collection of add-on software.

There is a Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE).  However while that is better than nothing at all, its near the bottom of the anti virus application totem pole.

Microsoft Admits That Third-Party Antivirus Is More Effective Than MSE

If you've been hit by one of these type of infections I would highly recommend that you follow daledoc1's advice to get further help from an Expert. Because a scanner does not find all items does not mean the system is fully clean.

I would suggest following the advice from the topic here Available Assistance for Possibly Infected Computers and having one of the Experts assist you with looking into your issue.

I would also recommend you read the following and pay attention to the bottom of the topic where there are additional links to some good information

MALWARE - ROOTKITS - TROJANS - WORMS - VIRUS

Thanks

Just a question of clarification: Aren't most of those sites redirects from another website (So not requiring infection), do they need the infection, or is it simply that it can be both?

No, they are mostly Internet based w/o requiring software on a PC.

If it was software on a PC it would be much more serious as they would be encrypting files, or locking the whole system and not just the Browser used to view the nefarious web site.

However, just to make sure...  It is always best to double and triple check in the event something on the PC is overlooked.
