Malwarebytes 5 / Microsoft.NETCore.App

Hello,

I was wondering about the size of the offline installer and realized that it contains Microsoft NET components in version 6.0.25. The current version is 6.0.28! (expiration date for Net 6 is November 12, 2024)

I wonder if the NET components are even necessary if they are already installed separately in the system anyway.

Thanks for help

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

Anything in the offline installer needs to be there there is no getting around it.

Unfortunately this is not the case! I deleted the two folders "shared and shared_bak" from the Malwarebytes installation directory and downloaded and installed the latest NET components in version 6.0.28 from the Microsoft server. And lo and behold, everything works without any problems.

Therefore my question to the developer support: Can you offer a separate installer without NET components?

Thanks and regards

Only the online installer is offered for that. The only offline installer that will be offered is the one currently available.

the online installer loads exactly the files that are in the offline installer. This also includes the Net components.

I hope that someone will get in touch who is familiar with it!

Please note that the Online installer would be the one you want if you don't want all the files. An offline installer assumes you may not have all files or may not be able to grab anything online so it includes all the files.

The .NET installer is already in the process of update and should be available in the next beta and about a week later in the production release

Hi @AdvancedSetup :

Does that mean that the Microsoft .NET Runtime v6.0.x is a system requirement for Malwarebytes v5.x and that this .NET Runtime will be installed on my system when my current Malwarebytes v4.6.x is eventually upgraded to Malwarebytes v5.x?

There's no mention of a .NET Runtime in the system requirements at https://support.malwarebytes.com/hc/en-us/articles/22266192061075-System-Requirements-for-Desktop-Security.

I don't know all the requirements and I'm sure we don't list all the minor, major libraries as Windows 10 and 11 come with many already.

Please don't worry about it there are millions of people already using the latest version and no support tickets about .NET issues.

Hi AdvancedSetup:

I'm not worried, I'm just annoyed that it isn't listed in the Malwarebytes v5.0 system requirements.

I currently have .NET Runtime v8.0 installed on my system but I uninstalled all my unnecessary .NET Runtimes last week, including the .NET Runtime v6.0 I haven't needed since I uninstalled my Dell SupportAssist v3.x utility over a year ago.  I'm just surprised to hear that the newly released Malwarebytes 5.0 requires a .NET Runtime v6.0 that reaches end of support in Nov 2024 when the current .NET Runtime v8.0 will be supported until Nov 2026 (see https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet).

I would highly suggest you try to relax about such documentation. There are literally thousands of companies that have little to no documentation.

Malwarebytes spends an inordinate amount of time and resources on trying to be very transparent and documenting many things. We simply cannot document every element of our operations.
