No, we don't need the mbst log file at this time

Let me have you run a new FRST scan though and include both new logs.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system.
You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply as well.

Thank you

Okay, ignore the FRST log for now.

In your device manager under Disk drives please tell us what the name and model number is listed there

I'm thinking we still need to run a scan to verify the hard drive is not failing so we need to know which one you have to get the right software.

Good day,

Here is the name and model number you requested: TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100H

I will hold off on FRST.

One question: I am receiving a "Google Update" box when I login. I am reticent to go ahead with it since it specifically says it will affect the hard drive and that is what we are working to remedy. Should I hold off on that update until we are further along in this process?

I'll await your next word & instruction.

Thank you,

Pcemkr

This link would appear to be for the Sony Vaio laptops in general.

That should be sufficient @pcemkr

Can you please temporarily disable all security software and try running FRST again and see if it will run now. If not, please restart into Safe Mode again and run it.

We need to get some logs back to see what's going on with your system.

Thank you

You have old compromised version of Java on the computer. Please go to Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features and uninstall the following.

Java 8 Update 171

The log shows that there does appear to be something wrong with the Hard Drive

System errors:
=============
Error: (11/24/2020 08:30:51 PM) (Source: disk) (EventID: 7) (User: )
Description: The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block.

However, the extreme slowness may have been at least temporarily fixed by running the Disk Check we had you run earlier, but once a bad block starts getting reported into the Event Logs that is often a sign there is trouble looming for the hard drive. There is no guarantee that the drive will fail or keep running. I've seen computers run for years with bad block being reported, I've also seen them die the next day. Please make sure you have all important data backed up to an external USB drive.

Backup Software

You also have Webroot Anywhere which for some customers creates a conflict with Malwarebytes. We can attempt to setup some exclusions and see if that helps or not.

Did this computer come from BestBuy?

Java 8 Update 171 uninstalled successfully!

I started backing up a few things on a USB just this evening, so I'm getting things in place and hopefully safe. I may have to try updating external hard drive as well. I'll check out the Backup link you sent as well.

As for Webroot, is it necessary to have both Webroot and Malwarebytes? I would be willing to consider other options if you have suggestions.

I'll also look at running VAIO diagnostics to see what comes up.

And Yes, I believe it did come from BestBuy.
