Freezing issue

I have the same freezing issue.  I've been following the threads and the solutions suggested, and none of them work permanently.  I suspect they are, at best, a result of whatever problem mb3 has taking some time to get bad enough to be noticeable.

I turned off self protection 2 days ago, and by this morning, when I did anything in chrome, it would take 2-5 seconds to respond.  Like, if I placed my cursor in the google search box on www.google.com, it would take 5 seconds before the cursor would show up and allow me to type.

I downloaded the support tool, and have run a repair, and it seems to be normal, for now, but it has seemed to be normal after most of these fixes, so I am not confident this in this yet.

I am creating this thread to keep track of this.

Hi @ScanIAm,

Is this issue consistently occurring for you?
Does this only affect Google Chrome? What about other programs or normal Windows operations in general?
Does disabling any of the Real-Time Protection modules in the Malwarebytes Dashboard have any impact?
Does disabling Self-Protection (Settings -> Protection -> Startup Options -> Turn the Self-Protection module off) have any impact?

After you've checked the above scenarios, would you be willing to temporarily revert to the previous component package and check if the issue still occurs?

If you are, please uninstall your existing Malwarebytes installation and use the installer linked below to install the previous component package version:

After installation, open Settings -> Turn off the, "Automatically download and install..." setting.
Ensure all Real-Time Protection modules and Self-Protection are enabled. Then check if the issue still occurs.

It's most noticeable in chrome, but it does seem to affect the desktop version of spotify as well.  I can watch it happen by opening task manager, changing focus away from the textbox I'm typing this message into.  If I re-click within the text box, the cursor doesn't appear for a few seconds, and malwarebytes service shows a high power usage along with cpu % going up.  I have disabled self protection and it doesn't help.  I will see if any of the protection settings help, but this is sporadic.  It seems to come and go.

As best as I can tell, this is a problem with the Ransomware protection.  It may also be due to interaction with the backup software I use, since this only becomes noticable when IDrive kicks in about once an hour.  When I turn off ransomware protection, the system is responsive, again.  

I'm going to try running without ransomware turned on for a day to see what happens.

I would also like to confirm that the issue appears to be related to Ransomware protection. I posted to another existing thread about this issue around two weeks ago and my post was later split into its own thread, but for some reason I didn't receive any notifications from the forum about responses (I'm subscribed to threads and checked my spam box and there were no emails from the forum), and the thread was closed before I realized there had been activity in my absence. Instead of creating yet another thread about this very same issue, I hope it's all right if I continue the discussion here.

I've recently been toggling ransomware protection on and off and can confirm that both Chrome and my system in general run much smoother when it's off. I would like to make clear that I was experiencing this issue in Windows 10 v1809 and updating to v1903 made no difference, so I've ruled out Windows itself as being the cause. I also have an automated backup program (Acronis True Image) that comes with its own ransomware protection, which I have switched off. To my knowledge, that program has not caused the hitching. It's only when I turn on MB's ransomware protection that I start experiencing frequent hanging and high CPU usage (MBAM service often tops the list at 15-17% utilization at the same time the freezing occurs). Chrome seems to exacerbate these issues, but I consistently encounter stuttering and hanging while playing games or using other programs. Again, the freezing stops when ransomware protection is disabled. The other protections don't seem to cause any performance hit that I'm aware of.

Based on the numerous reports about this same issue that have cropped up recently, it would appear that this is a relatively common occurrence among MB users, and I hope it will be addressed soon.

With ransomware protection turned off, I had no incidents of slowdowns.  I am going to run again, today with it on to see if it comes back, but this seems to be correlated with chrome to be causing the problem.  I run with javascript turned off and then manually enable for specific sites that I want to trust, and it seems that this problem only occurs on sites where javascript is running.  In fact, as I type this now, I can type ahead by a few words and they won't show up in the edit dialog right away.   I'm not sure what is being scanned for in ransomware detection, but it might be too sensitive?

Thanks for the information. Most of the reports coming in involve Ransomware Protection. We're aware of various performance-related issues with Ransomware Protection in the latest update and will have further information available on this shortly.

In the meantime, you may need to keep Ransomware Protection temporarily disabled to avoid experiencing performance issues.

Hello,

Could you install the latest component update and let us know if this addresses the issue please.

To install the update:

  • Open Malwarebytes.
  • Click Settings.
  • Click Install Application Updates.


After the update, you should find Component Package version 1.0.627 is installed. You can confirm by viewing the About page within the Settings.

Please let us know how you get on.

I've been running the latest MB component update for the past 24 hours with all protections enabled (including ransomware), and so far everything seems to be working much better. There haven't been any instances of freezing/stuttering thus far with Chrome or other apps, and the MBAM service is no longer constantly topping CPU usage. It looks like the issue may be fixed, at least on my PC.
