CCleaner to the rescue

Recommended Posts

So I get a call from a user, tells me computer is slow and there is no hard drive space available.  Hard drive is a 250GB and the user should be using less than 100GB. (work computer, so no pictures, music, videos)

I connect to computer and sure enough the hard drive is full.  I update CCleaner and configure to clean up the computer and temp file locations.  Long story short, this computer had 171GB of temp files... my new record now... (Total cleaned was 191GB)

It could probably do with a defrag now if you haven't already.

Did you also run disk cleanup or storage sense to check for old Windows Update files?

CCleaner no longer removes those.

You might also clear the WebCache as I don't believe CCleaner is able to fully clear that data either (few tools are, and I've been using this script to do so):

schtasks /end /tn \Microsoft\Windows\Wininet\CacheTask
esentutl /r V01 /l%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\WebCache /s%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\WebCache
del %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\WebCache\*.chk
del %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\WebCache\*.log
del %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\WebCache\*.jrs
esentutl /d %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\WebCache\WebCacheV01.dat
schtasks /run /tn \Microsoft\Windows\Wininet\CacheTask
