Malwarebytes Web-Protection causes high Cpu Usage on Avira WebGuard

Recommended Posts

Well,

after installing the latest component package version 1.0.508, i noticed that for some unexpected reason the cpu usage went up to 75%.

Looking at the taskmanger i found the Avira WebGuard Service causing this high cpu usage.

Somehow it went away,

and came back again and again (the highest cpu usage was 75%, sometimes is 50% and 25% )

I am using Avira Antivirus Pro,

but because the problem occourred since the latest malwarebytes update,

- switching off web protection immediately solves the problem.

I allready uninstalled malwarebytes, but the issue came back again.

I can not reproduce the problem, it just happens sometimes.

here is the log:

mbst-grab-results.zip

for now, i just try the repair button in the malwarbytes support tool...

Greetings,

This is most likely related to an issue with the latest Component Update 1.0.508 which causes the Web Protection component to conflict with the web filters in several other security products (so far both Avast and ESET have been confirmed) so for the time being, to avoid this issue you will likely need to either keep Web Protection disabled or disable Avira WebGuard until Malwarebytes publishes a new version/patch to correct the problem.

If you decide to disable Web Protection, I would advise installing the Malwarebytes browser extension beta which is currently available for both Chrome (as well as other Chromium based browsers like Vivaldi and SRWare Iron) and Firefox as it uses the same block lists as the Web Protection component in Malwarebytes 3 and also adds ad blocking, tracker blocking to protect your privacy, clickbait site blocking, as well as new behavior based blocking capabilities targeting new/unknown tech support scam sites, phishing sites and several other types of malicious sites.  It is fully compatible with the Web Protection component in Malwarebytes 3 so once this issue is fixed you may still continue to use the browser extension to augment your protection.  In the meantime the only downside of the browser extension compared to the Web Protection in Malwarebytes 3 is that it only filters sites for your web browser, not your entire system since it is a browser extension rather than installing directly into the network stack for your system (the Web Protection in Malwarebytes 3 uses WFP, the same technology/APIs used by the built in Windows Firewall so it blocks malicious sites for the entire system and all of the software on the system, not just the browser).

You can find out more and download the browser extension at the following links:

Chrome
Firefox
