Unable to scan single item

Recommended Posts

On our old Malwarebytes we could right-click on a document or other file we had downloaded and select Scan with Malwarebytes, and it would scan that one item. But with the newer version we're using we can right-click and select scan but Malwarebytes scans the entire drive instead of just the one object.

How can we fix this, please?

Hi:

Right-click context menu scanning is disabled by default in version 2.
Just open the dashboard > settings > general settings and change "explorer context menu entry" to "yes".

Also, for more information about the different scan types:
The different types of scans were renamed in version 2, and it has caused a bit of confusion.

"Flash" is now "Hyper"
"Quick" is now "Threat"
"Full" is now "Custom"

Hyper scan is available only to paid, PREMIUM users and is not routinely needed or recommended -- if anything is found, a subsequent Threat scan will be needed anyway.
THREAT scan is the most important and most useful scan -- it is the one that ought be run on a regular basis (daily is the default setting now in 2.0).
Custom depends on what drives, folders and files are selected -- routine use of a "full" system scan is neither necessary nor recommended, as it's a task better suited to your antivirus.

Thanks for your reply. Allow me to re-state the problem. Right-click context menu is already enabled, but when we right-click on a file and select Scan with Malwarebytes the Malwarebytes program opens (after several seconds' delay) to the Dashboard view and awaits further action from the user. If we click on Scan Now it begins a full drive scan. It does not scan only the file we right-clicked on; instead it scans the full drive. Is this a clearer explanation of the problem?

Hello and :welcome:

I've not seen that specific behavior before. You may want to try the following though and if the clean removal reinstall does not help then post back the requested logs.

  1. Please uninstall your current version of MBAM and reinstall the latest version. MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x
  2. If that does not correct the issue then please read the following and post back the requested logs. - Diagnostic Logs
  3. NOTE: There is an FAQ section with valuable information located here: - Common Questions, Issues, and their Solutions

Thank You

  • 1 month later...

Uninstalled MalwareBytes and waited a month or more. Now have installed it afresh, version 2.0.0.1012. When i right-click on a file or folder and select Scan with MalwareBytes it launches the scanner and LOOKS like it's going to scan everything but it only scans the item i requested. There's an indicator that tells you the number of files scanned. So, all is now well. Thanks to everyone for your kind assistance.
