about a week ago my video card died, tragic but not a problem. however, a couple days later I was suddenly unable to connect to any websites (including Google) it acts as though I have no internet connection (which I do). so of course I go to my default and try to run Malwarebytes. it opened up, I tried to run it, and right as the scan started the window disappeared. confused I tried to open it again, only to receive an error that read "windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. you may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

I started going through several of my basic tools (CCleaner, Avast, hijackthis, etc.) and I found that anything that does a scan of any kind gives me the exact same error. so I unfortunately cannot post any logs because I can't run any scans. I tried simply restoring the default .exe permissions and such in registry, but that didn't work either and I wouldn't want to risk messing around in there much anyways.

I am using windows XP and this has been really frustrating me, if I left out any needed info let me know and if I posted in the wrong place I will be happy to move it, please help!

Hi and welcome to Malwarebytes.

  • Download the file TDSSKiller.zip and extract it into a folder on the infected PC.
  • Execute the file TDSSKiller.exe by double-clicking on it.
  • Wait for the scan and disinfection process to be over.
  • When its work is over, the utility prompts for a reboot to complete the disinfection.

By default, the utility outputs runtime log into the system disk root directory (the disk where the operating system is installed, C:\ as a rule).

The log is like UtilityName.Version_Date_Time_log.txt.

for example, C:\TDSSKiller.2.2.0_20.12.2009_15.31.43_log.txt.

Please post that log here.

Next, download DDS by sUBs and save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the DDS icon and let the scan run. When it has run two logs will be produced, please post only DDS.txt directly into your reply.

TDSSKiller wouldn't run either, Thank you for replying to this, I have since had my system fixed by a computer technician friend of mine. to solve the whole unable to scan problem we removed my hard drive and scanned it as a secondary drive on another computer. AVG and malwarebytes and a couple others were able to clean up my system nicely and it is now running beautifully.

Okay thanks for letting me know.

I highly recommend the PRO version of MBAM; with it, it's likely that this issue would have been prevented in the first place.

Now that your computer seems to be in proper working order, please take the following steps to help prevent reinfection:

1) Download and install Javacool's SpywareBlaster, which will prevent malware from being installed on your computer. A tutorial on it can be found here.

2) Go to Windows Update frequently to get all of the latest updates (security or otherwise) for Windows.

3) Make sure your programs are up to date! Older versions may contain security risks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run Secunia's Software Inspector.

4) WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:

  • Green to go
  • Yellow for caution
  • Red to stop

WOT has an addon available for both Firefox and IE.

5) Be sure to update your Antivirus and Antispyware programs often!

Finally, please also take the time to read Tony Klein's excellent article on: So How Did I Get Infected in the First Place?

Safe surfing,
