Scanned Malwarebytes - CAN'T CONNECT to Internet

Recommended Posts

Fortunately, I had already previously installed Malwarebytes. Using the trick of switching .exe to .com allowed Malware to scan & find 9 files.

HOWEVER, the laptop will NOT connect to the internet. Wireless network Connection says "not connected".

'Repair' function doesn't work despite many tries. Also, when 'Viewing available network connections', response is: "Windows cannot config this wireless connection"

In addition, these following symptoms exist:

- safe-mode w/networking does NOT work (dozens of tries)

- no result when trying to 'refresh network list'

- taskbar has changed to gray, & dialog boxes now have an extra gray border around them.

And yes, somebody else's laptop does connect fine.

This is all AFTER having ran Malwarebytes scan.

Ran 3 times: 2 Quick Scans, 1 Long Scan (only 1st scan had infections).

OS: XP, sp2

Browser: Firefox 3.x (IExplore is never used)

Can't post the log, as it's on my laptop - which won't connect - but i'll MANUALLY enter the 2 likely ones (Firefox) below.

The 9 infected items :

(7) Registry Data Items

(1) Registry Values

(1) Files infected

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Clients/StartMenuInternet/FIREFOX.EXE/shell/open/command/(default) (Hijack.StartMenuInternet)

Bad: ("C:/Documents and Settings/Administrator/Local Settings/Application Data/mtp.exe" -a "C:/Program Files/Mozilla FIrefox/firefox.exe")

Good: (firefox.exe) - Quarantined and deleted successfully

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Clients/StartMenuInternet/FIREFOX.EXE/shell/safemode/command/(default) (Hijack.StartMenuInternet)

Bad: ("C:/Documents and Settings/Administrator/Local Settings/Application Data/mtp.exe" -a "C:/Program Files/Mozilla FIrefox/firefox.exe" -safe-mode)

Good: (firefox.exe -safe-mode) - Quarantined and deleted successfully

The other 7 were all quarantined & deleted successfully ALSO.

At this for 6 hours now - read most forums here but haven't found anything relating to this.

THe Malware was:

- Windows Security Center

- XP Antispyware

Greetings :)

We don't work on malware removal in this part of the forums.

Please read and follow the directions here, skipping any steps you are unable to complete. Then create a NEW topic here.

One of the expert helpers there will give you one on one assistance when one becomes available.

Please note that it may take 48 hours or more for you to receive a response in the malware removal forum, as it is often busy at times. Please do not reply to your own post asking for help unless its been more than 48 hours since you originally posted, as this can make it appear as though you are being helped and take longer for you to get help.

If you are unable to do all or any of the steps in the link to the directions above, just post your problem into the forum I gave you a link to anyway and someone will be able to assist you.

Thank you :)

Hello Exile360, thank you for a response,

I understood that this forum, "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Forum" was for Malwarebytes, it being the product I used, and Malwarebytes' impact in acting against, e.g. anti, the malware I had posted about.

"We don't work on malware removal in this part of the forums."

So you can imagine my surprise in discovering that the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware forum is not in fact, the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware forum.

Also, I notice that you've directed me to a forum that covers another product "HijackThis", which I neither use, nor am even familiar with.

Could it just possibly be, that you may not have read my question ?

Thank you again.
