Hello all,

I have problem with my Asus EEEpc 901 XP home notebook.

It's very slow, so I tried to install Malewarebytes to find out the reason.

During the install procedure I received the following messages:

MBAM_ERROR_EXPANDING_VARIABLES (0,9)

MBAM_ERROR_LOAD_DATABASE (3,0)

MBAM_ERROR_MISSING_FILE (3,0, mbamswissarmy.sys)

And the program stopped.

I tried to install it in several possibilities.

In safe mode, from usb stick.

Also with the help of a second pc to copy the files to the notebook.

Al without succes.

Have you any ideas?

The system cannot find the path specified.

Here's a fix that exile360 made, it is universal for XP, Vista and Windows 7 and should fix the problem:

Note: If using Windows Vista or Windows 7 you MUST right-click on the file and select "Run as administrator".

  • Please copy and paste the following text in the Code box exactly as written into notepad (not wordpad or any other text editor):
    @color 48
    @echo off
    if exist "%allusersprofile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu" md "%allusersprofile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"
    if not exist "%allusersprofile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu" md "%allusersprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"
    if exist "%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu" md "%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"
    if not exist "%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu" md "%userprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"
    del /f /q %0


  • Once you've done that click on File and select Save As...
  • In the Save dialogue box click on the drop down menu next to Save as type and select All Files
  • Name the file Fix.bat (the .bat extension is very important)
  • Save the file to your desktop and double click it to run it if using Windows XP. If using Windows Vista or Windows 7 you MUST right-click on the file and select Run as administrator otherwise it will not work.
  • Once that's complete try running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware again to see if it now works without error or not.

Hi -

Almost every MBAM_ERROR_LOAD_DATABASE error is corrected by deleting the current rules.ref file and having MBAM download a new copy. In cases where the problem keeps happening repeatedly on a particular system it's usually due to dropped connections and/or packets (often with the slower connection types such as satellite and dialup) or because of antivirus/firewall software interfering.

Show Hidden Files and Folders in Windows XP:

  • Click Start and select My Computer
  • Click the Tools item from the menu at the top of the window (if you don't see Tools press the Alt key on your keyboard and it will appear)
  • Select Folder Options
  • Click the View tab and make sure Show hidden files and folders is selected under Hidden files and folders
  • Next, uncheck the box next to Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • Then, uncheck the box next to Hide extensions for known filetypes
  • Click Apply then click OK

Then go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and delete rules.ref. Once you've done that, start MBAM and when it shows the error and asks to update, let it do so and see if that corrects it.
