pc problem, or, malware?

Hi all. I have windows xp, media center edition, and have been using IE8 as my web browser for some time.

About a week ago, I lost the ability to do Tools -> Internet Options -> delete: neither the temporary internet files or the listed sites under the history tab under favorites will go away; the cpu peaks at 100% until a few minutes later i get a window: Data Execution Prevention - Microsoft Windows, Run DLL as an APP window pops up.

I can: delete the temporary files manually, and also delete the visited sites manually from the favorites/history menu.

I have researched this on the web and tried all the suggestions: remove autocomplete, try IE8 without add-ons, try from windows booted up in safe mode,

but the problem persists. I even resinstalled IE8 but no dice.
