Windows popped up a Notification saying MBAM and Defender are turned off!!

Recommended Posts

The shot "MBAM-On or Off.png  was the subject of a "Help email, to which I received a response, ...however it's not shown in my email account, but was visible in the MBAM GUI.

Now I can't even find that, but as can be seen, there is a conflicting view of weather it is on or off!
Just now, I have found another equally confusing  proclamation, who is right and should I be worried?🙄

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

@Hexeta

Please do the following so that we may take a closer look at your installation for troubleshooting:

Hi Porthos, I ran this tool under a support ticket on April 12th, they were helping to find out just what has locked "Google Safe Search" ON.

I'm told by Google that I need "My Administrator's permission" to turn off the Safe Search option! Grrr!

The only Administrator I recognised was my Wife, and she died several years ago.

unfortunately, it seems MBAM Support could not find out who this mystery Administrator is!

I have asked my ISP if it's them, and they deny controlling what I'm able to "see".

Google are less than helpful to the point of obstruction since any and all "Google Help topics" on the subject are locked for comment or question.

So I had given up on that quest, ...and then this happens!

Here are the Logs gathered by the tool, and thanks for helping.

Lets do 2 things.

Turn off fast startup in Windows. Then restart.

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4189-turn-off-fast-startup-windows-10-a.html

Next change the following setting in Malwarebytes by toggling it off.

Silly question, but what have I just done that for?

Turning off that setting in Malwarebytes allows Windows Defender to run together with Malwarebytes. Additional Protection.

The Fast Start setting  when enabled keeps Windows from actually turning off when shut down. Fast Start causes issues for many users and programs in the long run.

Problem is, I've still got a Windows Notification saying "Virus Protection is turned off, Click to turn on Defender Antivirus"

This is what is supposed to look like. Yes you get an initial warning when changing the settings but it should stay gone now.

Yeah, but when I click on "Who's protecting me" In the right hand panel, it says "Microsoft Defender".

No mention of MBAM!

Is there somewhere that indicates that both are running in tandem?

Also, Safe Search is still "Locked"! :(

Why is that?

That is the way it is supposed to be.

The Malwarebytes icon in the system tray. It will tell you when it gets turned off.

That is a Chrome issue. It takes some manual work to fix that.

Please do the following and someone will work with you to fix that. Personally I cant stand Chrome and Use Firefox.

Follow the instructions in this topic then create a new topic in our malware removal area by clicking here and a malware removal specialist will guide you as they are the only ones authorized here to do that kind of manual work.

Yes, you are right, clicking on the Icon  shows all four check marks!

Wow! I'm surprised, is it really Malware that's causing the Safe Search to be locked and unavailable to me?

Have to agree regarding FF, I used it, and still do on my Linux machines, I think I got sucked in to Chrome when I built this NUC machine when W10 first came out as I didn't like Edge and Bing, though I must admit Edge has improved over time, but I have too much invested in Chrome to be changing  again at the moment.

I will re-visit this thread and follow your advice when I get back from holiday. as it just irks me that there is a setting that I don't have the right to change! Grr!😡

Final question, I have Premium courtesy of my Bank, and I notice in the MBAM GUI, that it is due to expire in 43 days!

Looking at the terms and conditions of the Bank's agreement with me concerning provision of MBAM Premium license, they say in the event that the agreement will end, you will be notified not less that three months before it ends.

'Cos I've had no such communication, can I assume that on "day 43" the license will auto renew without charge, ...that's the important bit!  🙂

I ask since I will be taking my iPad and Android phone on holiday  and have not until now thought of adding MBAM to those devices.

1am here in the UK, so I'm likely to be off to bed in the next few minutes, so If I don't  immediately respond, I'm not being ignorant!

Thanks for helping me this evening, much appreciated.

Not necessarily malware. The work needed, malware or not can only be done in that section of the forum and by only authorized helpers.

Other than the fact only certain members can assist. That is the only forum section you can download the needed attached scripts for the work.

Morning and just a quick one I barely noticed any lag in booting up today, so that's good!

The worrying thing is that the Microsoft Notification saying "Virus Protection is turned off, Click to turn on Defender Antivirus" is still there, admittedly it's dated "Sunday", but I'm unsure if I should just click on the "x", or on the message in case it messes something up! 🤔

MegaMegan, Not a good idea to post your email on forums where the world and his wife can see it.

I've alerted the Mods as you can't remove it yourself I don't think!

I started this thread, as I  too am not the sharpest knife in the Tech box!

I regret I can't offer you advice, but the Mods  will help you,  just hang on there!

My PC went into sleep mode  and on awakening, these two notifications were showing.

One from Sunday saying Virus protection is turned off and one from early hours of Tuesday saying Defender found no threats. and MBAB interface shows four check marks!

Which am I supposed to believe??

I have not dismissed or clicked on either message as I am unsure just what is going on can someone please advise me?

Thanks.

That is when I had you changed the settings. (Sunday) And is normal.

That is normal after it does its auto scan weekly.

Clear the notifications and watch them.
