Malwarebytes no longer will run on Windows Server 2019

Recommended Posts

I have Stand Alone Servers at different customers that I run Malwarebytes Premium (and Free) on their machines and Servers.

I have had no problems for years now running the product on many different Server versions but all of the sudden most of the Windows Server 2019 machines will not open the program any longer so I can run a quick scan.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing with no luck. I have tried running as and Administrator with no luck as well.

If I try to End Task on the Malwarebytes Service I get an Access is denied error or I get an Error 5: Access is denied if I try to restart the Service.

Looks like something is simply stopping it from running ??

Anyone else seeing this and have any ideas.

Thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

I am sorry to inform you that Malwarebytes Premium (stand alone) is not supported on any server OS and is also against the EULA as well.

I know you are going to say that it has always worked but it has never been supported for Server Operating Systems.

(b) Paid License.

If you purchased a license to the Software from Malwarebytes or from a Malwarebytes authorized reseller, then conditioned upon your compliance with the terms and conditions of this Agreement, Malwarebytes grants you a non-exclusive and non-transferable license to Execute the number of copies of the Software for which you have paid solely in executable form on the corresponding number of Devices owned or used by you. Furthermore, you may not Execute the Software on any Device(s) running a server operating system unless it is a Malwarebytes server product as reflected in its official product name and official release notes. OK, NO Problem, I did not realize that. I actually only used Premium version on 1 Server - I will remove.

I use the Free Version for quick scans monthly.

Should the Free Version work ??

I just need to purchase a copy that will run on a Stand Alone Server to protect the Server itself.

Probably not and is still against the EULA.

I will warn you the server one is pricey. Price is available when you contact sales from the page I linked.

If you have issues with the stand alone non server computers please feel free to post. Some are having issues.

To protect a server you also have to use Server-software off course, it has been for years like this as far as i know. It's not only for Malwarebytes, its with lots of software forbidden to run Retail versions off the product on an server. But this is always noted in the EULA of the software.
