Phxflyer Posted August 26, 2018 ID:1265673 Share Posted August 26, 2018 I am in the process of building a new PC for my wife. I will be moving her entire physical C drive, where Malwarebytes is installed, to the new build which of course will have a different motherboard. Will Malwarebytes see this as being installed on a new PC? Will it need to be re-registered? Or should I deactivate it beforehand? If so, what's the best way to do this? Thanks for any info about this.

Solution exile360 Posted August 26, 2018 Solution ID:1265679 Share Posted August 26, 2018 Greetings, Yes, it most likely will see this as a new system so if you can you should deactivate it first. In case you require instructions, just open Malwarebytes and click on the My Account button at the top right and then click on the Deactivate License button located at the bottom. Once that's done you may then migrate the drive to the new system/board and once Windows is up and running on the new system, you may then re-enter your license info and it should be able to activate without any issues, though if you do have any problems please let us know and we'll do our best to assist. Also keep in mind that while unlikely, it is possible that migrating the software to the new system may cause it to malfunction. If this occurs, which you'll notice immediately based on it failing to open properly and possibly displaying an error message of some kind, then all you need to do is download and install the latest version from here and it should correct the issue (no need to uninstall the existing copy first, just install it over the top). If there is anything else we might assist you with please don't hesitate to post. Thanks
Phxflyer Posted August 26, 2018 Author ID:1265682 Share Posted August 26, 2018 Thanks. Good information. Just for the heck of it, I installed a spare SSD that had MY system on it to see how updating the new motherboard drivers would go. It went fine. I wasn't connected to the internet, but did open Malwarebytes to see what it would do. It opened fine and said my system was protected. A minute or two later, it gave me a red X saying I needed to update the definitions, etc. I didn't notice what the activation status was, but everything was green before the warning. So I guess if it worked for me it will probably be okay when I move her SSD sometime later this week. But I will deactivate it first. Thanks again. Phxflyer Posted August 27, 2018 Author ID:1265699 Share Posted August 27, 2018 I guess the real way to ask this question is Malwarebytes Pro activation based on your PC system or is it tied to your registry? If tied to the registry, when moving the entire physical drive to a new system nothing would need to be done. If system based, like Windows, then deactivation would be needed. I will deactivate anyway unless I hear otherwise but just curious how it works.
dcollins Posted August 27, 2018 ID:1265772 Share Posted August 27, 2018 Malwarebytes uses components from both the installed version of Windows, and the hardware on your machine to for activation. The safe bet is to deactivate the old version and reactivate on the new device.
