WFP network driver

Recommended Posts

I read in the Malwarebytes FAQ " we have been relying on the Windows Filtering Protocol (WFP) for our IP and domain blocking protection layer for years. "

My current adblocker is AdGuard and in the settings I have this as well. Will it be safe to enable this in AdGuard? It is for adblocking in other apps that are not browsers from what I have read about AdGuard.

I am using Malwarebytes Premium will all real time bells and whistles enabled.

If you haven't done so already, please run these two tools and then attach the logs in your next reply:

NOTE: The tools and the information obtained is safe and not harmful to your privacy or your computer, please allow the programs to run if blocked by your system.

  • Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST)
    1. Download FRST and save it to your desktop
Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit
    2. Double-click to run FRST and when the tool opens click "Yes" to the disclaimer
    3. Press the "Scan" button
    4. This will produce two files in the same location (directory) as FRST: FRST.txt and Addition.txt
      • Leave the log files in the current location, they will be automatically collected by mb-check once you complete the next set of instructions
  • MB-Check
    1. Download MB-Check and save to your desktop
    2. Double-click to run MB-Check and within a few second the command window will open, press "Enter" to accept the EULA then click "OK"
    3. This will produce one log file on your desktop: mb-check-results.zip
      • This file will include the FRST logs generated from the previous set of instructions
      • Attach this file to your forum post by clicking on the "Drag files here to attach, or choose files..." or simply drag the file to the attachment area

After further digging, the WFP in AdGuard is for "modern UI" apps. Those have been in Windows since Windows 8 or 8.1. The WFP option enabled will only work for 1 app that I use at all. Its the browser in Windows 10  Edge or whatever it is. I never open it except for when I look at some kind of file, pdf I think it is. Not sure. If that is the case, there is no need for me to enable it. I will dig more tomorrow and find out from the AdGuard support if there is any other reason to have it ticked. Thanks for the post/help.

I will post back if I find out more that will help add info to this subject. Time for bed today.

You can try enabling it, however sometimes having multiple programs that utilize WPF can cause issues. The worst that happens is you turn it on, and they stop blocking properly. The best thing to do would be to enable it, then try to visit the test site at https://iptest.malwarebytes.com and see if the block still happens.

Once I enabled the WFP, Malwarebytes did not alert to the test page, but the test page did not load either. I will just keep WFP off in AG. There is really no need for it considering the information I have collected on it.

EDIT: From all I gather, the WFP option for AG is only for stuff like the new apps in windows 8-10. Like tablet mode for the start menu and stuff that runs from it, like games and such.  I would rather have MBAM handle the WFP because I rarely if ever use those apps and want my web protection to be handled by Malwarebytes in full.

The worst thing that can happen is your Windows start experiencing BSOD. Take it from me, I already went through this. Leave only 1 WPF. And better be from an antivirus software. I stopped my adguard WPF. However, both my Emsisoft and Malwarebytes seem to use WPF that leads to BSOD and I wonder how to disable Malwarebyte's one.
