regenerating TrojanClicker:JS/Chroject.A

Recommended Posts

Attached are the log files from FRST.

Unsure how infection occurred, but it was noticed yesterday due to pegging the processor.  Symptoms include phantom instances of chrome.exe running and also having several instances of an unknown exe file running that cannot be closed through task manager (Pddeiqhhjlk.exe).

After reinstalling Microsoft Security Essentials (due to not having the ability to start the existing install), the threat of TrojanClicker:JS/Chroject.A was finally detected.  Malwarebytes scans did not reveal anything as it was the first scan attempted.  MSE quarantines the threat, but it is instantly respawned in the same location (C:\Users\jacob\AppData\LocalLow\Apple Computer\umexrvgchyhx\Jgcjvtqjb\Xxbkgvybjrs.js)

http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/definitions/whatsnew.aspx?Version=1.187.1378.0&Package=AM shows this threat just being added today

Any help / advice and or assistance in resolving this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Hello,

They call me TwinHeadedEagle around here, and I'll be working with you.

Before we start please read and note the following:

  • Limit your internet access to posting here, some infections just wait to steal typed-in passwords.
  • Please be patient. I know it is frustrating when your PC isn't working properly, but malware removal takes time.
  • Don't run any scripts or tools on your own, unsupervised usage may cause more harm than good.
  • Do not paste the logs in your posts, attachments make my work easier. There is a More reply options button, that gives you Upload Files option below which you can use to attach your reports. Always attach reports from all tools.
  • Always execute my instructions in given order. If for some reason you cannot completely follow one instruction, inform me about that.
  • Stay with me to the end, the absence of symptoms doesn't mean that your machine is fully operational.
  • Note that we may live in totally different time zones, what may cause some delays between answers.
  • Do not ask for help for your business PC. Companies are making revenue via computers, so it is good thing to pay someone to repair it.
  • If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.

:excl: I can't foresee everything, so if anything unexpected happens, please stop and inform me!
:excl: There are no silly questions. Never be afraid to ask if in doubt!

MSE returns clean on a quick scan.  Running Malwarebytes now.  Otherwise, it appears not to be running anymore.  The processor isn't pegged, only about 20% usage with just MBAM scan running.  The mysterious processes that were present yesterday are no longer there either.

Is there any post clean up that needs to occur?

Can someone offer some help on this issue?  What is being done to stop this?

Here is what i did:

First, I read the stickies to posting in this forum.

Second, I followed the recommendations within the stickies for posting for help with this issue.

As a side note, the individuals that assist in resolving issues on this board are volunteers - they volunteer their time on their own free will to help people; they are under no obligation to do anything.

My suggestion would be to one, read the stickies, then make your own post with the issue you are experiencing.  If needed, reference this thread with a hyperlink in your own thread.  I'm not trying to be rude, but if you read the stickies you would realize that the quickest way to get assistance is in fact to make your own thread and wait.  The number of replies to a post dictate whether it is assumed someone has received help or not.  You will not get assistance with your specific issue by posting in this particular thread; that isn't how this forum works as each infection may be different so they have to be dealt with on an individual basis.

As for my issue, I am still awaiting an all clear from TwinHeadedEagle.  Although the issue appears to be resolved, it is customary to receive an all clear from the person whom is assisting in resolving your issue.  Again, these individuals are volunteering their time to assist because they are passionate about what they do.

After using the computer for a while after the initial removal, things seem a bit sluggish.  The original phantom processes are no longer present, so this may be due to additional bloatware that is installed on the machine (i.e. the crapware installed with the factory image).  I can go through and clear up some of those  pretty easily though.

Both MSE and MBAM return clean scans.

It appears to be running as usual.  The files associated with this particular infection are still located @ C:\Users\jacob\AppData\LocalLow\Apple Computer\umexrvgchyhx\yhowvhww\.  However, there are no signs of the previous tasks within the task manager.

There are several files/folders that are of unknown usage in and near this location; all of which, to my knowledge, are within the 'Apple Computer' folder.

I believe I can.  As far as I know, this folder is only there due to iTunes installation.  I can uninstall iTunes, remove this folder if it persists, then reinstall iTunes once everything is all clear.  I use ninite.com for downloading software and as far as I know their installation files are clean.

Are there any additional procedures you would like performed after iTunes and this folder have been permanently deleted?
