Thanks for all your patient help. I take it that the remaining issues cannot be solved in this forum (computer running slow.) Perhaps (like me) it is nearing the end of its useful life!

A friend who has a pay pal account is sending a modest donation on my behalf.

Thank you for the donation, very much appreciated. Before we continue and clean up lets try a clean boot, see how your system responds in that mode..

Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.

The System Configuration Utility dialog box is displayed.

We now need to configure selective startup options:

  • In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click the General tab, and then click Selective Startup.
  • Click to clear the Process SYSTEM.INI File check box.
  • Click to clear the Process WIN.INI File check box.
  • Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box. Verify that Load System Services and Use Original BOOT.INI are checked.
  • Click the Services tab.
  • Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
  • Click Disable All, and then click OK. this will disable none MS services.
  • When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

When you receive the following message, click to select the Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows start check box, and then click OK.

How does your system respond in that mode, is there any improvement.

I was logged on as administrator, checked the boxes as instructed; when I got to Services tab.
"Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
Click Disable All, and then click OK" and did that, a grey box popped up saying (to the effect) Access Denied you must be logged on as administrator.

I attach a screen shot of the top third of the services pane, after restart. Some running, some stopped and Hide All Microsoft Services not checked.

The screen shot is saved with a .doc extension, I do see an image, the extension of a screen shot should be a jpeg or png etc....

Lets try a different tack, do the following:

Download and install CCleaner from here: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds Make sure to opt for the "Slim version" that will have no toolbar additions.

When CCLeaner is installed run that program, Select > Tools > Start up > Windows tab. That will show the startup entries for Windows. If you look to the bottom righthand corner click on "Save to text file" select and save that file, post in next log.

I assumed you could not achieve selective start up (clean boot) in reply #56 you did say you received an access denied alert... Ok as you appear to be in a clean boot state  do the following to return to Normal mode:

  • Open msconfig...
  • On the General tab, click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK.
  • When you are prompted, click Restart.

Thanks Gerry, maybe I should have also spotted your mistake with the spelling.... At least System Look tells us msconfig.exe is exactly where it should be...

C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\msconfig.exe

Obviously we have a couple of spares available just in case....lol

What is the status now, can we closeout?

You should also be aware that support for XP will finish April this year, maybe time to look for an upgrade: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/end-support-help

Kevin... ;)
