Ran the scan, found things, now what?

Welcome to the forum.

Proceed like this:

Lets clean out any adware now: (this will require a reboot so save all your work)

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.

Make sure you click on download buttons that look like this, not "sponsored ad links":

  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.

    Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator

  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • When it's done you'll see: Pending: Please uncheck elements you don't want removed.
  • Now click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R0].txt) will open in Notepad for review.
  • Look over the log especially under Files/Folders for any program you want to save.
  • If there's a program you may want to save, just uncheck it from AdwCleaner.
  • If you're not sure, post the log for review. (all items found are adware/spyware/foistware)
  • If you're ready to clean it all up.....click the Clean button.
  • After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[s0].txt) will open automatically.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder.
  • Items that are deleted are moved to the Quarantine Folder: C:\AdwCleaner\Quarantine
  • To restore an item that has been deleted:
  • Go to Tools > Quarantine Manager > check what you want restored > now click on Restore.
Then..................

Open up Malwarebytes > Settings Tab > Scanner Settings > Under action for PUP > Select: Show in Results List and Check for removal.

Please Update and run a Quick Scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, post the report.

Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

Thanks for your help yesterday. I ran the scans and fixed the three public use library computers.

Tuesday, I am going to clean up the desk computer. That's the one with a long list of pups. Do I post back in this thread with details (if I don't know if they are all removable) or start a new thread?

And what is the difference between what the adware removal tool does and what Malwarebytes does? I feel rather out of my depth here. Do I also need another kind of cleaner?

I do use cccleaner to clear cookies and temp files, but that's more an internal management tool, not a threat assessment and removal tool.

Well AdwCleaner is designed just for adware/spyware, Malwarebytes will catch some of the adware but not as much as AdwCleaner. Sometimes MB will catch items AdwCleaner missed. Combined they do a great job together.

I don't know, you would have to ask the people at Malwarebytes.

You can have AdwCleaner clean those all up and then run MB.

I ran the adwcleaner "clean" and got an error that closed it.

 

Rescanned. The files and folders are gone.
