Malwarebytes Premium Trial is causing Access Violations for Valorant

Recommended Posts

Malwarebytes is causing Valorant to cause a serious crash very frequently and prompt to start a memory dump. Rarely will Valorant manage to start without crashing.
Windows Event Viewer shows that the faulting module is a Malwarebytes dll.

Faulting module name: mbamsi64.dll_unloaded, version: 1.1.1.60

Simply closing/quitting Malwarebytes entirely and re-enabling Windows Defender allows Valorant to load.

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Malwarebytes for Windows Help forum.

If you are having technical issues with our Windows product, please do the following:

Malwarebytes Support Tool - Advanced Options

This feature is designed for the following reasons:

  • For use when you are on the forums and need to provide logs for assistance
  • For use when you don't need or want to create a ticket with Malwarebytes
  • For use when you want to perform local troubleshooting on your own

How to use the Advanced Options:

Spoiler
  1. Download Malwarebytes Support Tool
  2. Double-click mb-support-X.X.X.XXXX.exe to run the program
    • You may be prompted by User Account Control (UAC) to allow changes to be made to your computer. Click Yes to consent.
  3. Place a checkmark next to Accept License Agreement and click Next
  4. Navigate to the Advanced tab
  5. The Advanced menu page contains four categories:
    • Gather Logs: Collects troubleshooting information from the computer. As part of this process, Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) is run to perform a complete diagnosis. The information is saved to a file on the Desktop named mbst-grab-results.zip and can be added as an email attachment or uploaded to a forum post to assist with troubleshooting the issue at hand.
    • Clean: Performs an automated uninstallation of all Malwarebytes products installed to the computer and prompts to install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows afterwards. The Premium license key is backed up and reinstated. All user configurations and other data are removed. This process requires a reboot.
    •  Repair System: Includes various system-related repairs in case a Windows service is not functioning correctly that Malwarebytes for Windows is dependent on. It is not recommended to use any Repair System options unless instructed by a Malwarebytes Support agent.
    • Anonymously help the community by providing usage and threat statistics: Unchecking this option will prevent Malwarebytes Support Tool from sending anonymous telemetry data on usage of the program.
  6. To provide logs for review click the Gather Logs button
  7. Upon completion, click OK
  8. A file named mbst-grab-results.zip will be saved to your Desktop
  9. Please attach the file in your next reply.
  10. To uninstall all Malwarebytes Products, click the Clean button.
  11. Click the Yes button to proceed.
  12. Save all your work and click OK when you are ready to reboot.
  13. After the reboot, you will have the option to re-install the latest version of Malwarebytes for Windows.
  14. Select Yes to install Malwarebytes.
  15. Malwarebytes for Windows will open once the installation completes successfully.

Just run the get logs after re-enabling Malwarebytes and attempt running Valorant?

You could try to reinstall Malwarebytes, don't know if the trial will still be active though. Without the real-time protection of the trial, it won't mess with the game.

Reinstalled Malwarebytes, closed Valorant, trial is still active so Real-time Protection is running.
Before wanting to restart, wanted to see if Valorant would open after Malwarebytes is enabled again and Valorant couldn't start prior to restarting.

Here's a log file with Malwarebytes just installed, pc hadn't been restarted yet, and Valorant can't open. Malwarebytes doesn't seem to show any pop-up notification for anything at all in regards for anything being blocked.

Made an account just to report this issue but see someone already beat me to it.

Running Malwarebytes Premium and I see others on reddit with the same issue. Hope you guys can fix this soon.

Just to clarify Valorant does run a kernal level anti-cheat called Vanguard, I'm not sure if something in the recent update caused it to get flagged or anything but I don't see MB popping up with anything blocked even if I check history on it.

Would believe Valorant is at fault at this point.

When using Process Monitor and Malwarebytes Malware and PUP protection on.
Valorant would load just fine.
When Process Monitor isn't running, but Malwarebytes Malware and PUP protection on.
Valorant would crash and prompt to do a memory dump.

I'll still keep doing my best to provide more information that I can get out of the reason why it's crashing for Malwarebytes if it may be something Valorant is doing that Malwarebytes is blocking.
But Valorant seems to be evasive in trying to find out what the crash is.

Thank you so much, it's really appreciated!  The logs you sent don't show the presence of any Windows crash dumps having been created. Would you mind checking to make sure crash dumps are enabled?

  • In Control Panel, select System and Security > System.
  • Select Advanced system settings, and then select the Advanced tab.
  • In the Startup and Recovery area, select Settings.
  • Make sure that Kernel memory dump or Complete memory dump is selected under Writing Debugging Information.

If it is already set, can you manually check for a C:\Windows\Memory.dmp file and if it's there, zip it and upload it to the same folder I sent you in PM?

If it wasn't enabled, do enable them and recreate the crash, then zip and upload the Memory.dmp

Thanks!

(I will be going offline soon, I'll get it to them as soon as I can)

@Nickoakz by any chance, can you locate this log and send it to me via PM?  C:\Program Files\Riot Vanguard\Logs\vgk_2024-06-27_20-38-21.log

Asking for it via PM because I don't know if they are encrypted or not, nor what other detail they may contain.

@RequiredSignUp Can you find one of the dates/time Valorant crashed and see if you can find a .log with a corresponding timestamp in this folder C:\Program Files\Riot Vanguard\Logs If so, please send it to me via PM (Private Message)

Thanks!
