adwcleaner 8.4.2 (BSOD), blue screen of death

Recommended Posts

I am a long term user of adwcleaner.  On previous versions of adware cleaner a BSOD frequently occurred.  A fix was posted "you basically just have to go to settings, scroll down to cleaning options and then uncheck "terminate all processes before cleaning" it's literally that simple.

For the current version 8.4.2 the BSOD occurs before I am able to enter Settings to see if the culprit is there (as listed fix above).  I am running Windows 10 64bit.

Thank you for your support

@radunn

Please do the following so that we may take a closer look at your system.

Disable-Fast-Startup
https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/299350-disable-fast-startup/

Then please restart the computer and then do the following.

WARNING: Do Not click the Repair option under Advanced unless requested by a Malwarebytes support agent or authorized helper

NOTE: The tools and the information obtained are safe and not harmful to your privacy or your computer, please allow the programs to run if blocked by your system.

  • Download the Malwarebytes Support Tool
  • In your Downloads folder, open the mb-support-x.x.x.xxx.exe file
  • In the User Account Control pop-up window, click Yes to continue the installation
  • Run the MBST Support Tool. The tool also downloads and runs a file called FRSTEnglish. Please allow it to run.
  • In the left navigation pane of the Malwarebytes Support Tool, click Advanced
  • In the Advanced Options, click Gather Logs. A status diagram displays the tool is Getting logs from your machine

Porthos and all whom reply to this topic.  I have complied with your instruction.  Please note that after 3-4 consecutive BSOD I removed v8.4.2 desktop shortcut; reverting to 8.4.1 then followed through with instructions.  I use a Desktop shortcut for adwcleaner versions.  Hopefully, the BSOD were captured in the support file scan

I would start by removing the following from the Hosts file.

Quote

Hosts File Blocks
========================================
Host data:    0.0.0.0                   telemetry.malwarebytes.com
Host data:    127.0.0.1 keystone.mwbsys.com

Instructions on resetting your HOSTS file can be found in this Microsoft support article.

Also, a question. Why do you use the limited ADWcleanr instead of he free version of Malwarebytes??

Hello @radunn,

Can you turn on the debug mode: https://support.malwarebytes.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038520134-Malwarebytes-AdwCleaner-Application-settings to generate a more detailed report showing the culprit for this BSOD?

Then run AdwCleaner as usual, run a scan + clean to trigger a BSOD, reboot, and share the file C:\AdwCleaner\Logs\AdwCleaner_debug.log please.

Regards,
