Google Chrome Detecting Malwarebytes As Malware and wont let you download

Recommended Posts

Both Firefox and Chrome as suspecting the following MBAM file to be malware.  I've never had issues grabbing files from here before (I grab them often so I have the latest versions when I'm out and about visiting clients) until last night's version/update was released.

The download is from the following link which concerns the file name below.

https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb3/

mb3-setup-consumer-3.6.1.2711-1.0.482-1.0.8077.exe

I had the same problem last night. I was migrating data and programs to a new Windows machine and was stymied trying to install MB on the new machine. Chrome and FireFox refused to download the latest MB install files, saying they contained a virus and were dangerous. I finally used Internet Explorer to get the latest package.

Here's the specifics: If you use Chrome to go to https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/ and try to download the Home version of Malwarebytes For Windows, the download bar at the bottom of the window will say, "This file is dangerous so Chrome has blocked it. (discard)" A similar problem arises when using the latest version of FireFox. I didn't try Edge because my attempt in IE worked.

This morning, in preparation for writing this reply, I found that there is a way to force Chrome to download the file. If you click on the download and acknowledge twice that you really do want to download the file, Chrome will do so. Don't hit the "discard" button.

Hi @nheimler and @B1948J,

We've contacted Google and are actively working to resolve this. We apologize for the inconvenience. There are a few options if you need it right away:

  • If you already have MB3 version 3.2 or later installed, you can the get the newest version by clicking Install Application Updates in Settings > Application.
  • If you need to download MB3 for the first time, you can download it from a site such as CNet where the current version is available.
