Does the Free Malwarebytes program auto update?

Does the Free version of the Malwarebytes program auto update when there is a new version?
Or If there is a new program version available, will you be automatically notified, when you are updating the database version?

The Free version doesn't automatically update program and the database version. You have to do that manually. When you update the database manually and if there's a new program version it will notify you.

That's what thought, it just seems it has been awhile since there has been any changes, updates, and fixes to the Malwarebytes program.
This PAGE shows release history for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium  2.2.1 / March 18, 2016 and its previous versions.
Does the free version and the pay version use the same version number?
I can only find the release history for the pay versions of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium.
