persistent malware can't seem to shake. malware bytes can't be run or reinstalled

Recommended Posts

After my kids downloaded something they thought was a game I've ended up with an infected computer that I just can't seem to get clean. It seems to have attached itself to windows 10 system dll's. I'm not sure which ones.  I'm thinking about doing a windows 10 refresh install to clean it up but thought I'd try you guys first.

When I first saw the malware I ran malwarebytes from a copy I had previously installed on my computer which found quite a bit of unwanted things. It had also disabed my internet but I was able to fix that. The virus had entered a dns entry on my network settings. once I set that back to what it was originally I had internet back, mostly.  Whenever I try to run something that downloads something ir errors out saying I'm not connected. for instance when I try to update malwarebytes. since that didn't work I tried uninstalling it and installing a fresh copy. it says gets all the way through the wizard then when it tries to start the install I get a setup error that says runtime error (at 110:137): Could not call proc. I get a similar error when I try and run updates with my anti virus. trying to install dropbox, and trying to sync google drive (it won't connect). I think I still have some internet goblins causing havoc.

Along those line, avast still is occasionally giving me a popup that says threat blocked; object c:\Windows\SysWOW64\dnsapi.dll; infection Win32:Patched-AWK [Trj]; Process C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Application\winmngr.exe. Also when Itry and do a boot time scan with avast there are several files that avast dll files that it finds that it can't repair.

At this point I'm at a loss. What scan do you want me to send to you first?

Hello and :welcome:

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them.
Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button. button.

  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.

  • The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.
