Windows XP computer very slow to start up

Update - I have now managed to do a clean install of XP being guided by the links you provided. I have now also added in all the service packs and windows update has done it' s thing. The computer start up much quicker - I should hope so after all this!

I just need to figure out how to get back to smaller icons and mouse cursor as they are rather large.

Other than the Windows updates I have only installed the free AVG and the trial version of Malwarebytes. The computer is really only an old spare so I can't thing of anything else.

Tomorrow will be the real test when we install the game that used to play ok on this computer. If I can get that working without it crashing I shall be very pleased.

We'll it looks like reinstalling XP was what was needed. Have now managed to get the game working again so very happy with that. Thank you.
