infected by trojan.agent in svchost.exe

Recommended Posts

Thank you in advance to whomever decides to help me.

I discovered this trojan virus a few days ago using Malwarebytes after I tried to run Norton 360 and it failed. I suspect I have had it for a while, though.

Before posting this, I attempted to download the DDS as instructed, but it disappears afterwards every time.

I know the svchost.exe file in C:\Windows is the illegitimate version of the actual application and is accompanied by the label "winrscmde".

I have attempted to end the svchost.exe's process from task manager and delete the false svchost.exe file, but it always reappears.

Using my registry editor (I had tried another site's suggestion), I deleted the key under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\DirectDraw\MostRecentApplication", which includes the subkey labeled "Name" and "svchost.exe" under the Data column. However, this also reappeared, leading me to believe it is associated with the trojan.

Like I said, I suspect I've had it for a while since before my computer crashed randomly a few times, but mostly after trying to type in Chrome's URL bar.

I will post the log for my most recent Malwarebyte's scan though, once it finishes.

Log from Quick scan from Malwarebytes, taken just now

Forgot to mention, I did try a few times to remove with MWB, but it fails.

Please run the following:

Please create a new system restore point before running Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit if you can.

MBAR tutorial

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from HERE

  • Unzip the contents to a folder in a convenient location.
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
  • Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
  • Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder..... mbar-log.txt and system-log.txt

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Note:
If no additional threats were found, verify that your system is now running normally, making sure that the following items are functional:
Internet access
Windows Update
Windows Firewall
If there are additional problems with your system, such as any of those listed above or other system issues, then run the fixdamage tool included with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit and reboot.
Verify that your system is now functioning normally.
I downloaded it, but when I tried to extract the files, it said Windows found a potentially harmful file and had blocked access to it: "fixdamage.exe".
After it finished extraction, I opened the folder it had created ("mbar-1.01.0.1021"), opened the "mbar" folder and found it empty.
What do I do?
Link to post
Share on other sites
Still trying to figure out how to extract it successfully.
However, when I searched "fixdamage.exe" in the start menu and clicked the corresponding file, it opened a black console window with a warning about what FixDamage will do and did I want to continue (Y/N?)
I input no and it closed.
I will now try safe mode w/ networking.
okay it is still blocking me from extracting the files (I am currently in Safe mode with networking)
This time, I tried to extract all the files except "fixdamage.exe" by copying and pasting, but this time, Windows Security blocked the "mbar.exe" file.
I can't access Norton at all even to turn off the firewall/protection through the start menu.
ok, let's take a different approach
Please do the following:
Download the appropriate version for your system of the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.
Enter System Recovery Options.
To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
  • Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account and click Next.
To enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:
  • Insert the installation disc.
  • Restart your computer.
  • If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
  • Click Repair your computer.
  • Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account an click Next.
On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:
    • Startup Repair
      System Restore
      Windows Complete PC Restore
      Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
      Command Prompt
[*]Select Command Prompt
[*]In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
[*]The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
[*]Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
[*]In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
[*]The tool will start to run.
[*]When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.
[*]Place a check next to List Drivers MD5 as well as the default check marks that are already there
[*]Press Scan button.
[*]type exit and reboot the computer normally
[*]FRST will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive, please copy and paste the log in your reply.
I am running the scan with MBAR right now. One question. Do you want the logs after the first scan or after I do this process until it shows no threats detected?
Link to post
Share on other sites
okay after the scan finished, I clicked Cleanup and confirmed the reboot like you said, but my computer failed to start before the login screen.
I went to startup repair and tried to start again to no avail. I went back to Safe mode with networking, which is where I am now. I don't see the svchost *32 (labeled winrscmde) in Task Manager, but the fake svchost.exe is still in the C:\Windows folder.
I am going to scan again like you said, but please let me know what you think of this.
I will also try to locate the logs as I do this in case you want them now. It had picked up 4 objects.
Still doing the second scan, but no, it did not boot normally after the first scan nor after the startup repair.
I will also let you know what happens after this scan.
Also, I was wondering, what are the two new things it detected? The forged file? What was that all about?
I have not seen those before.
I finished the second scan. This time it only found one thing: the trojan.agent in C:\Windows\svchost.exe .
Here is the system-log.txt
I was able to reboot in normal mode ^^
And I checked task manager and C:\Windows and no sign of the svchost.exe!
I will do another scan to double check.
  • Staff
looking better, we still have a little more work to do,
please do the following:
Refer to the ComboFix User's Guide
  1. Download ComboFix from the following location:
    Link
    * IMPORTANT !!! Place ComboFix.exe on your Desktop
  2. Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.
    You can get help on disabling your protection programs here
  3. Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  4. Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  5. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
    Note:
    Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  6. Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: If you encounter a message "illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion" and no programs will run - please just reboot and that will resolve that error.
Have not downloaded anything yet.
I just wanted to let you know that I cannot do anything with Norton, even disable it from the Start menu. I just tried again to confirm. It always says "Unspecified error" with the uistub.exe .
However, if it is a valid substitute, I can just delete all the Norton files because my dad has access to his account, allowing for re-download if necessary.
