  1. Yes it should. Or it does here with our ISPs. They are not interested in phone calls Also their sites have step by step guides and they expect you to read them if any problems occur. All you need to know is the basics of router setup, like how to log in! That is not a sure thing for everybody. I have had one problem. I paid for faster dsl but speed never arrived. So I complained and they send out a tech dude who immediately noticed modem was simply not capable of running faster. New modem and all was fine. Only way you can go ??? is if router defaults are so wrong it does not work and you don't know how to log in to the thing. If you can't do that you have a problem. Rest is settings. Most should not care but you could check Linksys site for firmware updates. At least check changelog for relevant bug-fixes. I would flash asap seeing only a minor update Also because then I would know flashing works. Once settled down and set up it just sits there.
  2. No Malwarebytes can only do what it can - as of right now Should there be a slow malware week then may be possible to tinker.
  3. I bet 1 eicar.com file it is matter of time before on/off enter GUI. I doubt suggesting regedit.exe or finding links to reg files can be a permanent or wanted solution. There could be a reason for delay. That some insist user should see window? I can understand that, why "support" a site with blocked content - or why not help a clueless site admin by giving useful info? And some will be curious But can amount of info be increased? Right now content is pretty much meaningless. There is no need for a headline saying Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for example. That gets old Would help a bit if Malwarebytes could show which window/app has blocked content. Hard to tell if machine is running full speed and multitasking is at its highest. And classification as well http://hosts-file.net/?s=classifications Most comes from hphosts right? So may be a click on balloon window could throw user directly to entry? May be servers need tuning first. Entry is full of links and technical stuff but that is a question of user being interested enough. Is always 100% relevant and not generic blah blah. I could also imagine some stats, like todays winner, weekly totals - so easy to find the worst and put them in hosts/router as to limit popups. A pretty version of this pic with a hidden link to hphosts database would be nice. I guess not possible to use domain name instead of numbers.
  4. Exactly, user must read "it will also install Cisco Network Magic software..." from pic no. 2 even if they have no intention of clicking Install network magic button! Worse than opt-out trick from free (with toolbar) software. No mentioning of a trial version either. I only noticed it was trial when I click about in help menu. Which means people will spend days setting all this up - only to discover it shuts down unless they pay. Trend is bad enough but if you already have some parental control in place I can also see conflict with Magic. Includes much control itself, like shutting down devices at certain time, logging, other control features. How well will that work? Tricky bundling method. I think I was wrong in saying it was harmless still looks like a useful tool though.
  5. I knew I had seen MRG before, only took 1 day to rewind http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=251113 On a level where they use fake usernames. This is what some companies use as promotion and why refering to x or y test is waste of time. Even more to debate since topic might as well be a 3 week old weather forecast. Not all is like those guys hopefully but then again - read the NSS lab test showing 83% hitrate for IE8 Smartsreen - from real live samples! That was the whole point of the test so valid numbers. Stay skeptical.
  6. I was bored so downloaded the iso for WRT54G2 hardware version 1.5. Well see pics. You don't get Trend stuff but Magic program will be installed during the walk-through of setting things up. What happens when you click Setup. There is a folder with a bunch of jpgs in it. Just shows how to put in keyphrases and such. You already know that. Then I installed Network Magic. Seems nice but a 7 day trial not a full version. So unless Trend is free you get zero from Linksys. Magic installs both services and startup, most ask for internet access. There is also a WebEX component, for remote stuff I guess. Probably the "WebEx support manager for internet explorer" entry in add/remove. Can see it can go wrong if wrong buttons are pushed. GUI can be shut down but it is always running. Uninstalls ok. Google for more pics, I can see use for this if a family have a network, the more devices the more reason - and if it was free When done with uninstalling browser opens with this http://www.trialpay.com/checkout/?c=dfb5567&tid=6rGUpC- or you can get Magic for free if you do trialpay. They list price as 30$.
  7. Any security software is permanently beta but it is rough that is true. I use free DynDNS Internet Guide. They have many paid services but this is free - in case you were hinting to be careful. Or are you advertising for them? heh. Now OpenDNS no longer talk and talk and talk about the problems of blocking malware, because they finally made it a paid service!, it is nice to have a free option. In fact with an account you can disable landing page for unknown addresses. 100% invisible, no ads or search redirections.
  8. Yeah, you should check their blog and wiki. Details must be revealed at some point. Guess they already are but I don't understand too much. He explains method here http://support.immunet.com/index.php/What_is_Immunet%3F and here is another person wondering http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.ph...mp;postcount=44 There are quite a few posts on that forum. Have not checked all. Most of what he says sounds so right Just learned there will be a premium version with added features, free version will remain free. Seems to have same position in the bundle of layers as Malwarebytes but probably a good thing to check official supported AVs http://support.immunet.com/index.php/Immun...ents_%28Beta%29
  9. Is called promotion/marketing/advertising. This is real reason many of these tests are done. As said keyword is "independent" - and good luck finding that http://www.anti-malware-reviews.com/
  10. May be you should investigate who Malware Research Group is? What is their history? Seems like test is not relevant for Malwarebytes, like whatmeworry said. Thought you were going to link to your private battle of the numbers, heh. Unless you find it funny it is waste of time. Look up NSS lab and their browser filter test. Check how many approved of that. How they presented test was perfect for headlines too. Much usability for tech journalists Good example of how reality and "lab" tests don't really match at all. Nothing beats history so rely on that and your own experience with programs.
  11. Just make a graph showing 100% for Malwarebytes and 0% for anything else. Then you win ma3oony Sign it Dr. Malware and your opponent will surrender.
  12. Those who want to aruge on the internet with graphs would need a link Even ClamWin and Spybot&Destroy can probably make Malwarebytes look silly. Depends a little bit on testing conditons - like who is doing it, to begin with. Reminds me of the test showing IE8 stops 80+ % of all malware exe-files. People with knowledge and degrees will swear by such comforting findings Others will shake head. Separating BS and marketing from reality is a major task. Especailly with security stuff since it is very possible Malwarebytes can suck 1 day - but then next day be king. More or less meaningless to evaluate fixed situations. Evaluate history, peoples experiences, your own instead.
  13. That was current if not default details of connections in line 1 Not being able to edit post is pain when using brain is behind tapping keys!
  14. All you need to know is not default details of connections to whatever you use routher for. Encryption standards, password, keyphrase and such. You should write that down on paper. When that works you can play with extras from Linksys and friends. If you can't install anything without getting all the Trend stuff thrown in forget about the cd. If something goes wrong you can always go back to a Windows vs. router only situation that has already proved to work. I have an older WRT54GL router with 3rd party firmware. Have experimented a lot so know Linksys unofficial forums, http://www.linksysinfo.org/forums/ to be precise. Unless something is physically broken each and every time someone get into trouble it is because they don't understand what RTFM maeans or should not experiment at all Unless interested in tweaking router and connection just do what manual says. What might be more importan than Linksys/Trend tricks is how connectivity is between your new router and wireless part. If no problems at all rest is just settings.
  15. He could have paid Malwarebytes and still gotten in trouble but finding those $ in pocket is a good thing. Check out removal forums. Many suggest or even require you to run Malwarebytes but often that is just beginning of the journey. If Malwarebytes were so good it did not matter what hit you there would be no free version or angles really do exist. Following stop as early as possible idea then try DynDns Internet Guide http://www.dyndns.com/services/dynguide/ or other "internet" blockers. WOT or a hostsmanager with updated input from hphosts. Anything effective and not just for show. I have only used DynDns for a couple of days but it does stop fresh malware domains offering crap making it hard for Malwarebytes to fix created problems. Highly interesting and why most others including OpenDNS charge extra for it. Free and why not? There is overlap with Malwarebytes, with filters in browsers but not a problem. They are all behind as any blacklist will be so help each other increasing hit rate. Btw Buttons. I don't think Immunet is based on user ratings. I have not seen a clear explanation of how it works. For now I think it somehow take advantage of the accumulated protection from Mcafe, AVG, Norton or something. Hooks into their protecton/signatures somehow. Best cloudy thingy yet regardless of questons. Perfect for those with a dislike of dumb resident scanner like MSE Immunet must be worst file scanner ever, sloooow but 1. beta (huge lack of info regarding removals/deletions) and 2. who cares, it only kicks in during incomings/installations. Nice extra protection on level with DynDns. A why not program, but a bit weird
  16. No CD probably has a connection wizzard thingy which will see too connectons are set up properly with pwords, encryption. Even that is not absolutely necessary. XP after SP2 is compatible with best encryption like WPA2 or so I think... Most can connect directly to router with no gadgets. Video is of Pro Magic. Have no idea what you get but I seriously doubt any changes it make cant be restored - with the exception of TREND stuff. May be you get Mcafee instead Potential problem with that. Was about to say dump the cd and just download latest version your self. http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support/WRT54G2/download oh setup wizzard is 282mb and an iso. They really really want you do consider
  17. Actually parental segment is also Trend, half the video is about Trend! Well you are correct in being concerned about install options. Might get the whole fat suite package. There must be a little nifty Cisco/Linksys tool hidden in there.
  18. Does not look boring http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/products/CNMPRO# You probably don't need any extras but check the video. It might "hijack" networking but how else would it work? I noticed references to a trial TREND when she speaks of home network defender, about 1.49. Be careful about installing whatever 3rd party hidden in Magic. If not possible to unselect Trend during installation there might be a little hijacking after all. Depends on your existing setup and how much of an annoyance Trend is to that. Tool itself cant possibly hurt.
  19. Either you were a Toptenreview spammer or you misread topic. I knew you did Toptenreviews and all it stands for is a trigger for response though. Well hphosts is also a major contributor to WOT YoKenny1. What they should focus on since that part work brilliantly. I don't like the signals they send or any false positives but you should give WOT a lot more credit than you do. Don't even try to compare with similar services - you will get infected or at least tainted They have obviously also put tons more work into plugin which is WOT to end-user. Much to love but they need to cool it with the trust in "social" ratings. The more they try to make WOT a sure thing on any computer, used as promotion on any site too!, the worse it will get. And we forget service by far is the best "blocking/warning" tool of its kind. There is nothing cool about "social" at all
  20. His take on their business concept is still correct. Why change what works? No you did not answer Bobc11 question since he request "free Web filtering software". Was why I posted. TopTenReviews focus is on paid software due to business concept as explained by the Avast dude. Yes, if Avast had been number one then what? I know exactly what would have been posted. May be not by Avast employees (I hope not) but definitely by the most eager fanboys. Marketing/promotion is tricky and evil, like alcohol
  21. If TopTenReviews is more trustworthy to you than WOT you need to reevaulate your sense of what is up and down on the internet. Don't make it so easy for them. TopTenReviews is rouge itself and has been around for many years. Turn off your adblocker and experience and evaulate the real internet - you might get hints as to which category TopTenReviews fit. You must have lost track at some point or is way too kind/naive. Here is short but correct explanation from an Avast dude http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=121...02828#msg102828 Actually I will quote him - from 2005 btw, old news you better get in sync with because much activity on internet circles around these power$. SEO spamming and such is highly related for example.
  22. Yeah they have had rouge or rouge like software on their ranking lists as well. Motto should be "we tell you what to buy" instead of "we do the research so you don't have to" - which actually also stinks! Is taking monetizing the web a bit too far but brilliant idea I guess. Appeals to a click, click way of computing/surfing/buying - the internet
  23. Forgot WOT which is also effetive http://www.mywot.com/ Difference between dns blocking and a browser plugin but if set up so it does not annoy it is also great. Just tell it to shut up unless site is glowing red. A lot better than Norton Safe Web, Trends, Browser defender and what others. Why I forgot WOT might be because of sites like TopTenreviews which are perfectly green and yet comments show this has been a crappy unreliable marketing site for years http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/toptenreviews.com or I don't use WOT. Comments could be bogus and it is ultra green, also possible. Must know how WOT works to use service correctly. I would not trust WOT blindly, some do and so you have a problem. Good for not debatable malware blocking though. Updates fast and from good sources. There is a firefox add-on called Linkextend which checks current site against a handful of services like WOT. Then you can see why WOT is only one worth considering, at least when it comes to malware.
  24. Toptenreviews is like the opposite of free YoKenny1. Big BUY icons sending you off with affiliate IDs is all you get from there. But regardless of purpose may be check out DynDns fairly new "Internet Guide" http://www.dyndns.com/services/dynguide/ A dns service like Opendns, Google, your ISP but this one blocks malware/spyware. Much the same way Malwarebytes IP blocking does. Overlapping with Malwarebytes or browser filters is not a problem. I don't think any other free service does this on dns level? They use Barracuda for source and as you can see they are all about virus http://www.barracudacentral.org/ Find some fresh malware domains and see for yourself. Takes out those on top of list, from today! Well some of them but then you have Malwarebytes IP blocking. Anything that avoids interaction of security software is a good thing if we assume Barracuda is not riddled with false postives that is. Besides this major feature it has similar setup as Opendns with categories to block. No stats or anything to look at. Can block or white list own domains though. Opendns might be better in blocking "online dating" sites or whatever. If you want filtering for security purposes it is useless with malware, dyndns not. Malware category is a paid service. Can smell a paid dyndns service coming but works just fine as it is. Pic show what you see when testing malware domains and get lucky! This was a direct link to an exe-file. If purpose is control Microsoft has free parental filtering http://download.live.com/familysafety if not on Vista or 7 as does Norton https://onlinefamily.norton.com/familysafety/loginStart.fs K9 might be worth a look http://www1.k9webprotection.com/index.php Can still use Opendns or Dyndns I suppose. If interested in hosts filtering search forum for "hostsman" I am sure that program has been mentioned many times. That or similar almost a must-have to make hosts file methode human and usable.
