Offline update

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to use Malwarebytes on a possibly infected system that is not connected to the internet. I tried to update it by downloading the database on another PC using this method:

I made sure to delete the old database and rename the new one to the exact same name

While I didn't receive any errors, my log at the end of the scan indicated that I was using an older version of the database. I'm wondering if the update method mentioned above actually works (just a display problem), or if I'm somehow actually still using the older database.

I also tried to use the official database update installer, but that one didn't include a newer version than the one that came with the installer

While Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware's user interface and logs will indicate that you're using an older database version, it does in fact use the newer version of rules.ref that you copied over manually or installed using the offline updater. It just doesn't update the metadata that shows the version and date info when you update this way, which is why this method is only recommended as a one-time option to use when dealing with an infection that does not let you update normally.
