HELP Malware won't full scan

Recommended Posts

So when I went to run a scan on my laptop last night, I started up malwarebytes, with no problem. I Update and it took awhile to complete said update, but it wasn't a big concern at the time (I think i was going from Database version 5489 to 5505?). Then I went to run the scan and locked my computer.

I wake up this morning to discover that windows has the following pop-up: Malwarebytes has stopped working.

I look at the malwarebytes window and it says in the line where it lists the current file being scanned: Preparing to scan system.

I am running Vista Ultimate SP1, 32- bit OS

any Ideas? Suggestions?

Hello and :)

Please exclude the following files from your antivirus and then try the scan again:

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude them from it as well

For Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

For 64 bit versions of Windows Vista or Windows 7:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbam.dll
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\rules.ref
  • C:\Windows\System32\drivers\mbam.sys
  • C:\Windows\SysWoW64\drivers\mbamswissarmy.sys

Note: If using a software firewall besides the built in Windows Firewall you'll need to exclude MBAM.EXE from it as well

Note: Once that's done, please make sure that if either of those programs has any sort of web filter, that you add the following as a trusted site:

data-cdn.mbamupdates.com

The FAQ contains examples of setting file exclusions for some known AV products

Please post back and let us know how it went.

@ JCD:

In addition to what Firefox expertly suggests, please be sure to update your Vista to SP2.

SP1 is near the end of its support by MS (and is insecure):

Where can I find SP2? Also, there is a security update for vista that came available in Sept. 2009. Every time I try to install it, it fails. Also, windows will sometimes tell me that I have an exploitation of the windows software...

The photo shows the update that won't install. (It's the one thats selected.....)

As for downloading SP2 for Windows Vista you can get it from the Microsoft site HERE

I would install the Service pack first, and then do updates afterwards. It may fix your issue for that update that fails to install as well.

@ Firefox:

while i'm typing this, I'm getting ready to install Sp2. A friend helped me find this! Once this installs, I'm gonna update Malwarebytes and try to run a scan (probably after a restart......... I'm fairly sure I'm gonna have to........)

will post results after all that....

Thank you! :)

Hi, JCD:

FYI, Firefox gave you the links for how to add the AVG exclusions and how to get SP2.

The BLUE, UNDERLINED words in his post ("FAQ" and "HERE") are actually hyperlinks --- if you click on them, they will take you to the appropriate web page.

There was a lot of helpful info in his post, so you might have missed it.

Also, please use the ADD REPLY button to reply to this thread -- it will make it much easier for everyone to read. :)

Sounds like Firefox has you on the right track -- once you get your Vista updated, your MBAM exclusions for AVG set up, and your AVG exclusions for MBAM set up, you should be "good to go".

Please post back and let us know how it goes,

daledoc1

PS You can set up your Windows updates to install Windows patches automatically, or at least to notify you when they are available. This will help keep you up to date for Vista and less vulnerable to security threats.

@JCD:

Great!

In addition to adding all the MBAM file exclusions in AVG, it would be a good idea to add AVG to MBAM's "Ignore List" (if you haven't already done so).

Just open MBAM, click the "Ignore List" tab, click "Add", which will open a window to allow you to navigate to the folder location where AVG is on your hard drive; select that folder and add it to the Ignore list.

I've attached a screenshot of what it looks like on my computer (albeit with a different AntiVirus program); the file path on your machine will be a little different, but it will probably be something like C:\Program Files\AVG.

Regards,

daledoc1

Uhoh.... Malwarebytes just crashed.

I was browsing the internet and got a alert from Malwarebytes saying: Runtime error '28': Out of stack space.

Doesn't say what it was scanning.... also, it was stopped at item # 191646 Time: 49 Mins, 52 Sec.

also, windows popped up the window about malwarebytes stop working.

Anyway to resolve?

also, I haven't added AVG to malwarebytes' exemptions yet...... but that will come.
