Recovering From Antivirus 2010 Infection Need Help

Recommended Posts

I used Malwarebytes to remove the Antivirus 2010 virus from my win xp system. It took a while, but finally worked. I don't see any remnants of the virus (popups & etc.). The problem is now I cannot get updates from microsoft, I don't know if the virus may have changed some setting on my system or what happened. I am slightly pc literate. Is there another program I need to run? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi -

2 quick questions - Do you have XP SP3 , run a quick Malwarebytes scan and ckeck SP3 is listed (a 15 second scan will show this, then stop) -

Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 - Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702 (from the top lines of my scan) -

Do you still have Windows updates turned on -

The infection may alter some settings -

Thank You -

I am running XP w/SP3, I am now running a quick scan. I didn't get an option to check SP3???? Windows update is turned on. It has been sitting on 62% downloaded for 2 days I have tried rebooting. I also tried to do a Windows Live OneCare Scan and it only got to 15% and went no further, I tried that about 5 times with the same results.

Webroot & Symantec

This is gonna sound really bad, but I don't know. I thought if the program is running it's actively taking care of everything. Is there a section you have to personally set up to watch for viruses? I haven't said before, but thank you so much for taking time to look into this for me.

:D

Running two more antiviruses(active or not)is a no no. These can cause slow downs, conflicts and some serious problems. I suggest you to remove one(Webroot in my opinion), but it is entirely up to you.:D

To remove one click Start---- Set Programs Access and Defaults then Change or Remove Programs and locate anything that says Webroot or Norton then click Change/Remove and follow the directions. :)

As above by Buttons -

Start > Control Panel > Add Remove > and select one to remove - Are either of these paid versions or free versions ??

Thank You -

Paid versions, so the 2 antivirus programs are causing all the probs with IE. I didn't have the prob before the virus attack. If i need to get rid of one it will be Norton/Symantec, because that program didn't find anything when it scanned for the virus. At least Webroot found the rogue antivirus program. Is there a reason u prefer Symantec over Webroot?

OK -

Norton seems to miss several items like you described , and if it finds them sometimes it will not fully remove them -

That is a step in the right direction to start with - Those 2 programs will conflict with each other -

Now open Malwarebytes > Click on Updates > and Run a Quick Scan with Malwarebytes program -

See what we get this time -

NOTE : Please use the ADD Reply Tab so that you do not fully repeat all of the last statement -

Not really. I've only tried Symantec(Norton Internet Security)which I hate, but I would recommend it over Webroot as I've not really tried it. Preferably I would choose nether and go for a free solution such as Microsoft Security Essentials. :D

Hi southerngirl777, and welcome to Malwarebytes :D

If you feel you are still infected see the instructions below.....

Please read the following so that you can begin the cleaning process:

As we don't deal with malware removal in the General Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Forum, you need to start a topic in the Malware Removal forum so a qualified helper can help you fix any malware related problems/infections you may have.

  • Please read and follow the directions here, skipping any steps you are unable to complete. Then post a NEW topic here.
  • After posting your new post, make sure under options, you select Track this topic and choose Immediate Email Notification, so that you're alerted when someone has replied to your post.
  • One of the expert helpers there will give you one-on-one assistance when one becomes available.
  • Please refrain from making any further changes to your computer (Install/Uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc...) unless advised by a malware removal helper. Doing so can result in system changes which may hinder the attempts by a helper to clean your machine.

NOTE: Please DO NOT post back to (bump) your topic within the first 48 hours.

Replying to your own posts changes the post count and helpers are looking for topics with zero replies. If you reply to your own post helpers may think that you're already being helped and thus overlook your post.

    • If there is no reply from any experts after 48 hours, you can reply to the topic, asking for help again.
      Or
    • You may send a Private Message to a Moderator or Administrator asking for assistance.

Alternatively, as a paying customer, you can contact the help desk at support@malwarebytes.org or here.

Please be patient, someone will assist you as soon as it is possible.

PS: Please use the "ADDREPLY" t_reply.gif button instead of other ones when you start replying. :D
