How do I get rid of My PC Protector?

Help! My computer has been infected with My PC Protector. It has taken over Malwarebytes so that won't even run. I've read up on it and some prople say it is very hard to remove and involves going into the registry etc. and that I may as well just reformat the hard drive and start over. If possible, I'd like to avoid reformatting the hard drive. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I ought to proceed and what I ought to do?
