Neverending Trojan site pop-up

Recommended Posts

I started getting a pop-up saying that a site was blocked due to a trojan. By searching, I found someone with the same problem:

I ran checks with Malwarebytes itself (it didn't detect any viruses, and still doesn't whenever I run a check), with AdwCleaner (it detected two PUPs, which I quarantined and cleaned) and with FRST to log any additional information after. I'm not sure what I should do next. Any advice?
I'm attaching all the logs I can gather and that either have detections or may be required.

Please run the following fix

NOTE: Please read all of the information below before running this fix.

  • NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine.
  • Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system that cannot be undone.

Once the fix has been completed, please attach the file FIXLOG.TXT to your next reply

Farbar program:   FRSTEnglish.exe

Save the attached file:  FIXLIST.TXT to this folder C:\Users\anorr\Downloads\

NOTE. It's important that both files, FRSTEnglish.exe, and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Please make sure you disable any real-time antivirus or security software before running this script. Once completed, make sure you re-enable it.

Run the Farbar program with Admin rights and press the Fix button just once and wait.

The fix may possibly take up to 60 minutes to complete

If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.
The tool will make a log named Fixlog.txt in the same folder you ran the Farbar program from. Please attach that log on your next reply.

  1. NOTE:  This fix will run a scan to check that all Microsoft operating system files are valid and not corrupt and attempt to correct any invalid files. It will also run a disk check on the restart to ensure disk integrity.
  2. NOTE: As part of this fix all temporary files will be removed. If you have any open web pages that have not been bookmarked please make sure you bookmark them now as all open applications may be automatically closed.
Also, make sure you know the passwords for all websites as cookies may possibly be removed in some cases, but not all cases.
  3. NOTE: As part of this fix, it will also reset the network to default settings including the firewall. If you have custom firewall rules you need to save please export or save them first before running this fix.

The following directories are emptied:

  • Windows Temp
  • Users Temp folders
  • Edge, IE, FF, Chrome, and Opera caches, HTML5 storages, Cookies and History
  • Recently opened files cache
  • Discord cache
  • Java cache
  • Steam HTML cache
  • Explorer thumbnail and icon cache
  • BITS transfer queue (qmgr*.dat files)
  • Recycle Bin

Important: items are permanently deleted. They are not moved to quarantine. If you have any questions or concerns please ask before running this fix.

The system will be rebooted after the fix has run.

I have also found a Reddit thread related to the topic (https://www.reddit.com/r/Malwarebytes/comments/1dzj7vk/google_chrome_malware/?rdt=41068), as well as this thread on this forum (https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/313168-your-software-blocks-our-vpn-server-addresses/ ), that shows the same IP address as the one that shows in the prompt. As far as I am told, it may be related to AdGuardVPN, and I did have a Chrome extension. I removed it, and the pop-ups seems to have stopped. This information may be useful, so I think it belongs here as well.

Thank you for the update @AnorRinna

Yes, the logs do indicate that Google Chrome was the source of the block

The fix did remove many other unwanted or undesirable minor issues. It also found and corrected some other Windows issues.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.

Please RESTART the computer and run the following so we can validate if there are any other issues left over.

Thank you for the logs @AnorRinna

The logs do not indicate any obvious infections.

A few recommendations.

1. Windows Defender did have an issue updating within the last 24 hours. It could have been a temporary network issue, but check on it manually and make sure Windows Defender can update

2. Your installed version of Malwarebytes is Malwarebytes version 4.6.16.330  - our latest version is version 5.1.6.117

If you wish to update please download and run the following

MB4 Offline Installer
https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb4_offline

MB5 Online Installer
https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb5-windows

3. You may wish to review and see if you want to clean Google Chrome any further or not. If no more signs of an issue then you may not need to clean anymore.

Please follow the directions from the following topic for a more extensive article on cleaning Google Chrome if you do decide to clean more.

Resetting Google Chrome to clear unexpected issues

4. Please Uninstall, Update, or otherwise address the following as appropriate for your computer.

If you're not doing any programming you may want to consider removing all old versions of Python and install just the latest. Make sure what you're running does not have a dependency on an older version

Then RESTART the computer and check for Windows Updates and install any found.

5.  Please make the following change in Malwarebytes if you're using the Premium or Trial version

  • Please open Malwarebytes. Click on the small gear icon to open the Settings and go to the Security tab.
  • Then turn off "Always register Malwarebytes in the Windows Security Center"
  • Restart the computer

It is highly unlikely that you need to setup exclusions for Windows Defender, however if you experience any issues, please see the following article and setup exclusions
between Malwarebytes and Windows Defender

Malwarebytes for Windows antivirus exclusions list
https://support.malwarebytes.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038522974-Malwarebytes-for-Windows-antivirus-exclusions-list

Then visit the following links on how to setup exclusions in Windows Defender

Add or Remove Exclusions for Microsoft Defender Antivirus in Windows 11
https://www.elevenforum.com/t/add-or-remove-exclusions-for-microsoft-defender-antivirus-in-windows-11.8797/

Let me know if there are still any signs of infection or any other unresolved issues.

Thank you

Once you have all of the updates, including Windows, let's recheck and verify this service has been installed and running.

Windows Defender:
==============
MDCoreSvc Service is not running. Checking service configuration:
Checking Start type of MDCoreSvc: ATTENTION!=====> Unable to open MDCoreSvc registry key. The service key does not exist.
Checking ImagePath: ATTENTION!=====> Unable to open MDCoreSvc registry key. The service key does not exist.

Here is what it should look like in general

C:\>sc qc MDCoreSvc
[SC] QueryServiceConfig SUCCESS

SERVICE_NAME: MDCoreSvc
        TYPE               : 10  WIN32_OWN_PROCESS
        START_TYPE         : 2   AUTO_START
        ERROR_CONTROL      : 1   NORMAL
        BINARY_PATH_NAME   : "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Platform\4.18.24060.7-0\MpDefenderCoreService.exe"
        LOAD_ORDER_GROUP   :
        TAG                : 0
DISPLAY_NAME       : Microsoft Defender Core Service
        DEPENDENCIES       :
        SERVICE_START_NAME : LocalSystem

Thank you for the logs

Did you check for Windows updates?

Your computer appears to be missing an update for Windows defender that a Windows Update should install

MDCoreSvc Service is not running. Checking service configuration:
The start type of MDCoreSvc service is set to Demand. The default start type is Auto.
The ImagePath of MDCoreSvc: ""%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows Defender\platform\4.18.24060.7-0\MpDefenderCoreService.exe"".

Please make the following change in Malwarebytes if you're using the Premium or Trial version

  • Please open Malwarebytes. Click on the small gear icon to open the Settings and go to the General tab.
  • Then turn off "Always register Malwarebytes in the Windows Security Center"
  • Restart the computer

Possibly due to the Region you live in. Maybe Microsoft hasn't released for your area yet.

ATTENTION!=====> C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Platform\4.18.24050.7-0\MpDefenderCoreService.exe FILE IS MISSING.

We'll ignore that then for now.

How is the computer running now?

Any signs of possible infection anymore or any other unresolved issues?
