Hi jram,

Please visit this webpage for instructions for running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Before you download it though, rename it to jram.bat

Now navigate to Start --> Run, and enter the following command exactly as shown:

"%userprofile%\desktop\jram.bat" /killall

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

thanks- but still no luck. followed for the download OK, entered your commandline as above, got the unknown publisher window, hit run and then i just got the little block progress window like i did when i tried on my own- never went to the combofix window "preparing to run" or "disclaimer" windows as shown to expect in instructions.....

what's next?

Hi,

Please open HijackThis, and select Do a system scan only.

Place a checkmark next to the following entries (if present):

O21 - SSODL: zigesepud - {4b32e26e-376f-4d0d-a35d-edf0d121453f} - (no file)

O21 - SSODL: ninohihij - {86e3377c-010a-4856-b8e9-f1d11640bc0c} - (no file)

O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: gahurihor - {4b32e26e-376f-4d0d-a35d-edf0d121453f} - (no file)

O22 - SharedTaskScheduler: gahurihor - {86e3377c-010a-4856-b8e9-f1d11640bc0c} - (no file)

Then, close all other open windows, leaving only HijackThis open, and select Fix checked.

Delete your copy of ComboFix and grab a fresh copy. Save it to your Desktop, but do not run it yet.

Please reboot to Safe Mode (tap the F8 key just before Windows starts to load and select the Safe Mode option from the menu).

Run ComboFix from Safe Mode and see if it will run now.

If no joy, reboot into Normal Mode.

Next, please use the Internet Explorer browser and click here to use the F-Secure Online Scanner.

  • Click Start Scanning.
  • You should get a notification bar (on top) to install the ActiveX control.
  • Click on it and select to install the ActiveX.
  • Once the ActiveX is installed, you should accept the License terms by clicking OK below to start the scan.
  • In case you are having problems with installing the ActiveX/starting the scan, please read here.
  • Click the Full System Scan button.
  • It will start to download scanner components and databases. This can take a while.
  • The main scan will start.
  • Once the scan has finished scanning, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button
  • It could be possible that your firewall gives an alert - allow it, because that's a connection you establish to submit infected files to F-Secure.
  • The cleaning can take a while, so please be patient.
  • Then click the Show report button and Copy/Paste what is present under results in your next reply.

Next, download my Security Check from here or here.

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Let me know how things are running now and what issues remain.

sorry i've been slow getting back- downloaded 7 ran f-scan, during it wanted disk to restore windows, without doing that, i had to select "yes" to keeping "unrecognized versions"- don't know if that affected results, but here they are:

won't let me post- too long so i've attached it.

then i downloaded your security check (got icon on desktop) but says can't find "securitycheck\securitycheck.bat", so it won't run. again- thanks for all you're doing-

jram,

I'm afraid I have some bad news...

The infection that you can see in the F-Secure scan, Win32.Expiro is what we call a file-infector.

These are particularly malicious, in that they infect all of your legitimate programs.

What I highly recommend now is a reformat and a reinstallation of Windows XP.

Please let me know if you are prepared to do so.

You may backup and save all files except programs (meaning pictures and documents are okay), because if you backup any applications, they will transfer to your clean system, and you will be reinfected.

So, with that said, do you have your Windows XP CD?

yuck! i was afraid this was where we were headed, but, i do have the resinstall disk from dell with XPpro SP2- i assume it is workable for this? i have not done a reformat before- any special process or just follow my manual to reinstall XP?

thanks for all your help.
